We have a strange situation that I can't figure out. My colleague and I have the same AutoCAD versions installed on our machines.

When we select a point that we brought in as a shp file, I am able to see its associated ID in my properties box.

When she does the same exercise, she cannot see the ID. Her properties box appears to be missing the bottom component.

We are looking at the same AutoCAD file.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm sure it's something really dumb!

Thanks,

Liesl

Hello! Unfortunately I cannot share the drawing due to confidentiality issues.

I noticed that the dialog box showed different locations - I snipped the box when she was on a different point but the result is the same and we did both check BH25-02. I attached the shp file we are using but that may not be useful. Is it a variable? As far as I know everything is pretty much default on both machines.

That is an excellent question Allen. The points were imported using mapimport. I opened her same drawing and didn't do my own import. So we are looking at apples/apples situation.

Thanks for these links - I will look.

We are both using AutoCAD Civil 3D 2024 (AEC edition). I think the only difference is I have Raster Tools installed and she doesn't but that shouldn't make a difference

Here are the additional steps we took to figure this out: (spoiler alert, there is no concrete explanation)

1. Other draftsman (#3) opened same drawing (we all share files from central location) and could NOT see the point IDs either on his machine.

2. This draftsman deleted the points and re-imported them using MAPIMPORT. Now he could see the IDs.

3. Original drafter (#1) came back from lunch, we asked her to show us how she imported points. In Map (planning & analysis) from insert tab, she selected MapImport. Brought in points (I was checking to make sure she had selected the add data option, I was sure this was missed) but she did it correctly. When she checked the points, she could NOT see the ID.

4. I opened the same drawing on my machine, could not see the point ID. I deleted and re-imported the, using MAPIMPORT (from Civil) from command bar. I could see the point ID. I saved this drawing.

5. Original drafter (#1) opened the drawing I had just saved and COULD SEE THE POINT ID. The problem was not with her properties box settings.

6. Finally, she deleted the points and re-imported them using the MAPIMPORT command from the command line instead of tool bar, the way I did. Now she could see the point ID.

Conclusion: There may be a glitch with importing from the insert/mapimport tool bar. She did shut down AutoCAD between steps 4 and 5 so the restart may have fixed something. I have run out of energy to check again to see if her initial import method (from toolbar) was the problem but I have used that method many times with no issues. My guess is that restarting her AutoCAD fixed some kind of bug.

Thanks for the input and hopefully this helps someone else in the future. Ugh what a waste of a day.

Have a nice weekend!

The drafter had rebooted her machine that morning and this "error" showed up afterwards. I think that it may have been a glitch with how she was importing the data from Map. (Tool bar insert, Map Import.) .The rest of us imported typing MAPIMPORT in Civil. I haven't confirmed this and it may very well be a case of turn off, turn on. (ever see "The IT Crowd?")

@Liesl_H

Make sure your colleague is ''starting' Civil3D' from the desktop Shortcut (or Taskbar Icon) labeled Civil3D20XX. This insures the Civil3D Profile is used at StartUp. Using another method may, or may not, start the Program as Plain Vanilla Cad and not with the complete features associated with Civil3D.

If the Civil3D desktop icon is missing, then you can re-create one doing this:

Start Menu=>Autodesk=>Civil3D 20XX=>(Imperial or Metric)=>RIGHT CLICK=>More=>Open file location=>Right Click Civil3D (Imperial or Metric)=>Send to=>Desktop (create shortcut)

If you work in both imperial and metric, make sure you create two icons: one imperial and another for metric so you'll have one profile for metric and one for imperial. You can't (or shouldn't) substitute one icon for the other. If you do you'll have viewport scaling issues on your layout tab.

Always appreciate your thoughtful responses. Thank you!

We each have custom Civil and Map profiles saved but work mostly in Civil.
