D-ref alignment, then create profile by layout

I've seen a few posts around denoucing the above workflow.

Why?

What goes wrong?

I have used this workflow on a few projects, but generally smaller ones where there is no corridor and the profile won't be d-reffed. I haven't had any problems with it.

Alignments and profiles are generally lightweight enough in terms of processor resources, memory usage etc that they can be maintained in a single drawing. I would also be concerned about trying to work on a profile if someone else is editing the alingment drawing.

I've done it in the past and it has been hit or miss, but its the misses that stopped me from doing it

I think the only reason to put them in different drawings is if you need to be able to have multiple people editing the profiles at the same time. You can take the one alignment and dref it into multiple drawings and then multiple people can create profiles in those drawings.

Other then that, I can't think of any reason to do it.

Well, the reason we did it that way was to have all the alignments in one drawing that can be x-reffed into multiple profile drawings. But for each street we created its own profile in its own drawing. The alignments were in the x-ref just so you can see the stationing of cross-streets in plan.
But if it's going to cause problems we can avoid it. It's a pretty simple step to do each alignment & profile together in it's own drawing and d-ref the alignments around for cross-street stations.

When I Dref the layout profile it creates its own alignment in the prospector ignoring the parent alignment.

I've never seen those emails. I must have got click-happy at some point I guess, I can't really imagine how. In fact, I've never seen the button "Need an Answer" on any threads (started by me or someone else) before now.

Thanks Joe, good to know. In my projects when I've done this I've never needed to d-ref the profiles. But it's probably a practice we should reexamine.

I see them on my own threads now, but I never saw them before. Did something switch or am I just blind? Also, I have some questions left 'unsolved' for years, but I've never got these emails that some have mentioned.

So, for any 'Desker' responding to the request for an answer: It was a mistake, I'm sorry!
