Anybody here use PA GIS data?

If anyone knows what is going on with PA GIS data I would love to hear about it.

Orthoimagry says it's in PA83-SF (NAD 83 state palne south) feet. I pop it into a file with the same coord sys using mapiinsert and everything scales 3.2 times larger....metric?

County boudaries, roads and water courses imported from shp file say the shp has a coord sys of antartica98.LL assigned. Nothing imported scales correct or is in proper coords. Why would PA use antartica??

Well I couldn't find anything for Bucks County here,

More than likely it's in Metric. I can convert it for you if you like. Give me info on what to download and I will download it and convert it for you.

Oh wow Todd, very cool but I need counties, roads and municipalities. May be shorter if you could provide me a workflow. I would appreciate it.

Well, the workflow is use Global Mapper...lol. That's what I use. Extremely powerful program for the price. I think it's like $400 now. It will literally open up 100's of file types and you can convert and reproject to any coordinate system with a click of a button.

I checked the web site, didn't say if the evaluation os fully functional. I will check on Mon.

Does the offer still hold if the demo won't do what I need? 🙂

Someone made a mistake when creating the shapefile. The LL Antarctica is the first system on the list and he/she forgot to assign the correct coordinate syestem. You might check the Penn State clearinghouse for data.

The hardest part is digging up the sources. There's a world of data out there to sift through.

I am astonished that the whole PA dataset is useless in C3D.

Todd if you don't mind, could you look at these and see if you can make sense of them? I need them in a PA NAD83 state plane south.

Do you check any units on that data? I nsert those shp files and the data set is at the origin and way to small to be a state or even a town...

Even the 2010 ortho imagery needs to be inserted into a metric template to get things to scale. Unfortunately the file is saved in meters but the distances scaled in that file are feet. Inserting it into a metric template is the only way to get a parking stall to come close to 9'x18' to 10'x20'.

Now if you and Dave just reply with the solution, "PA GIS data is useless in C3D due to the fact that the goverment hired someone (more than likely an intern) to map this that knows nothin about mapping this". I can give you guys the solution. 🙂

John,

Unzip, then drag-n-drop those shapes into a blank drawing. Autocad will automatically assign a coordinate system and you'll be able to look at what you've got.
