What version? Do you have all the SP's?

do you have widows set to best performance? turn all the animation off

if you are working with a large LIDAR data set it behoove you to clip it to a size needed for the task at hand. This may help.

Answer to your question regarding the tutorial; I wont say smoke and mirrors, but there is more than likely some data management going on similar to whats being suggested that the tutorial does not discuss.

If you are grading a big site be fore warned a bunch of FL and gradings will balloon the files size. Be organized and clean.

I would suggest leaving automatic surface off. Simply create a surface and add the projected FL's to it. The big gy for you is to clip your target to a relavent size

Every time i try and run a grading command autoCAD freezes and then crashes. How is it that in online tutorials and autodesk tutorials the user can run large surface building commands and grading commands with almost no lag. My system runs on 64 bit 8 gig ram, so that can't be the issue. graphic card and all other software is up-to-date and meets the requirements listed for civil 3d. this is ridiculous and hours spent trying to run, what should be, very normal functions in civil 3d.

Grading tools are great when they work but can be very buggy so a few things to try

Ensure you don't have any zero levels on your feature lines

AUDIT and PURGE the drawing

Exit Civil 3D and delete the contents of your %temp% folder

Did all of those things. I can get the grading to come in but only if i have the automatic surface creation turned off. So i do that and then once the grading is in i try changing the properties to create the surface and is freezes again. I am using an existing ground surface from LiDAR. So it is very complex, is that my issue? I have the surface data shortcutted in to try and reduce the file size. The area is around 60 acres, so it is a very large surface.

In my experience LIDAR data causes more hassle than it saves as the points are far too dense for practical purposes. The grading algorithm will still be considering the full surface while attempting to grade so maybe worthwhile to try and simplify the surface before grading.

"...So i do that and then once the grading is in i try changing the properties to create the surface.." not sure what you mean by this. Perhaps you should try adding the grading feature lines to a new surface.

Without the dwg to test it's difficult to suggest many other options

("...So i do that and then once the grading is in i try changing the properties to create the surface.." not sure what you mean by this. Perhaps you should try adding the grading feature lines to a new surface.) Toolspace - Sites - Grading Groups - Right Click My Grading - Grading Group Properties and check the box for Automatic Surface Creation. I will try simplifying the surface. This the the only option for a basemap of the existing ground. like i said the area is 60 acres, at this point during the preliminary design, its just too large to survey. Thanks

You have to realize that civil3d has to compute xyz, slope intercept, yadayada for every occurance of the LIDAR and if you turn on the triangle you'll get an appreciation for all the calculations required. Now go into the tutorial file and turn on the triangles - Big difference I bet.
