project points and 3dpoly on vertical plane

Helo,

i have a series of elevated points along a straight line that i surveyed with a total station that represents the certerline of a rising ramp.

i have only the points that have xyz coordinats and i connect them with a 3d poly.

how can i project the points and the 3dpoly on a vertical plane ? i am trying to generate a vertical profile of the ramp.

please forgive the silly questions but i never done something like that in autocad and c3d. with some research i made i did not manage it. i used flatshot command and i get a message that there is no body to project.tryied the profile but i do not know how.

please someone help or point me where to searh for. profile, section? alingment?

i have no knowledge of all of the above. my knowledge is limited to simple 2d drawings on top plane.

here is the dwg i am talking about.it seeems a very simple task but do not know how to do it.

tryied the section plane command and create section but still i get the message that there are no solids.

why should i have solids? i only want to have some lines(that are 3d entities) , i see them fine on the rirght , bottom , top ... views but i cannot capture that "right " view and save it as dwg?

i am also reading the alignments , but it seems to be too complicated. it is basic autocad task and not c3d i think.

what i am missing?

If you make a 3D Polyline, going point to point, then you can create a Quick Profile. Seems like you should be able to make a regular Profile, but without a Surface I'm not sure how.

To create a surface when you only have a line of shots: Make the 3D Polyline into a Featureline and offset the featureline a small amount on either side. Then use the resulting Featurelines to create a Surface. You can then create an Alignment and use that to run a profile from the surface..

PS Sincpac automates the process.

I use it a lot in curb stake. Offset the TOC FL 4.8 & 5.2 feet and create a surface. That way when I create 5' offset point I can have them take the elevation from the surface and have that available in the field or to create cut sheets.

i used Allans methode and worked fine.now i have a profile view.

how can i export the view to a drawing?if i explode it the red line in the view disapears.

still i wonder if a simple autocad and not c3d version can do a simple task like that and how.project some lines on a plane..

I'm not sure I understand when you say "project some lines on a plane". I thought that is what the Profile was for. If you're looking for a "Graphical" representation, then I'd take the CSV file into Excel and make a Graph.

imagine a shape that is made only with lines in 3d space. no other solids or objects.

i can "see" that shape with the predefined autocad views for example right side.

is it posible to save that "right side view" as 2d dwg?

or maybe add a custom view and save what i see on that view as 2d?

the flatshot works only if thjere are solids.but i have only lines..

OK, maybe. How about swapping Northing with Elevation? Export in PEZ, start new drawing, Import as PEN. Drawing attached.

Dave, i didnt thought that!.
nice solution if the points are alighned east to west.
if the points are upon a line that has a significant azimuth then i think i get distorted results.
i should rotate first to east-west line and then swap nort -elev.

Just a few things to add:

- unless your points are in a dead straight line, there is no need to do any offsetting, adding boxes or anything else to create your surface. Simply add the points to the surface and you will be able to create a profile of it.

- you don't need a 3dpoly, in fact it is easier not to have it

- to create a 2dpoly between your sequential points use 'pn, this can then be used as the basis for your alignment

- I don't think I fully understand what's being asked here, but I thought the intention was to transfer the 'side on' view of the profile into 2d (X-Y) drawing space? If so I can't see why exploding the profile didn't work?

See my screencast, it's rough but hopefully you can see what I mean.

i tried your solution too.

i create the surface profile fine but as i explode it in block the surface profile line only disapears and i get only a block with an empty diagram.

what am i missing?

Not sure. Are you clicking on the profile itself (not the profile view) when you explode? First time it will explode to a block, then if you explode it again you will get the lines. Maybe it's a layer setting? although I can't see how that would have the effect you're describing. If you're able to post the drawing then it should be easy enough to figure out.

The other solution I had the in back of my mind for your original question was that you could get your 3dpoly line, then rotate it 90 deg around a flat 2d line between the start and end points. You then have the 3dpoly lying on its side so to speak. Then you flatten it by converting to a 2d poly. If that's not clear, and assuming you're interested I could do a quick video.

it was my mistake. i was clicking at the profile view item only.it is 3 objects total.profile view, profile and databand.

if i sellect all of them and explode i am ok.

Mick what if i had generated sections for example upon an alighnment and a surface and wanted to export as dwg?is there a way to get dwgs automatic or should i put them all in the model space and explode?

@achillesgr I'm not really sure what you're wanting your end product to look like and what other uses you have for your drawing, so it's a bit hard to say to do it one way or ther other. I generally try to avoid using techniques like that last screencast, unless the only thing I'm after is that particular bit of geometry. If you're doing civil design work and you need do other things with surfaces, alignments, play with cross-section styles, etc. then I'd go the surface/alignment/profile route.

I'm not sure what you mean about automatic drawings. There are tools in civil3d to process survey points to produce automatic linework which would be worth exploring if you have a lot of these to do. When you get used to coding the field data properly on the fly it is nice.

@Pointdump . Thanks Dave. I find I often make a suggestion, then wonder afterwards if it will actually work the way I said - so end up trying it out and learning a bit myself at the same time.
