Hi,

C3D 2016 w/Win7

I try to use set the coordinate system on a fresh dwg with nothing in it using Prospector, Settings tab, right click drawing name, Coordinate System tab. I pick my system. I hit Apply, or OK, and it doesn't work - it immediately clears the coordinate system field and replaces what I selected with No Datum, No Projection.

I imported a point cloud of 1.5 million XYZ points and this stressed my machine out. I restarted C3D, but it didn't help. I have not restarted the machine.

What do I have to do to assign a coordinate system so that it actually sticks?

THANKS

Can you do it with MAPCSASSIGN?

It sounds like you may need to do a reboot or even a repair.

I didn't try the Map command. I *did* do a reboot and it stuck. Importing all those points did my machine in.

I wish C3D could handle point clouds better, especially since data acquisition of massive point files is becoming pretty common. I know that you can use Map to depict surfaces, but only to depict them, not to design from them, or follow water drops, or get volumes, etc. But 1.5 mil XYZ points was more than my very capable machine could handle, I guess.

thanks

D,

Not sure what's happening with your Coordinate System not "sticking". Allen's suggestion of a repair might be necessary.

1.5 million points shouldn't be a problem for 2016:
https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad-civil-3d/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Maximum-point-cloud-displayed-points.html

In what form is your data? CSV or LAS? How are you importing your data? When you import points with a CSV file you can "sample" the points to reduce the number. With a LAS file you can reduce the number of points with LASThin, one of the free LASTools programs:
https://rapidlasso.com/lastools/

You can also make up your surface with different densities of points, more dense in your areas of "focus":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GottqJ5r4Cg

Another day, same problem. MAPCSASSIGN worked, using drawing settings did not.

I had a comma delimited XYZ file for the surface. I imported them into a surface as a point file. It slowed the program WAY down. I will look at LAS, thanks. but, it seems that how i define points for a surface shouldn't matter - once the points are in there and the surface built it slows.

D,

LASThin is for LAS and LAZ files. For a CSV (comma delimited XYZ) file, sample your points on import.

Please post your drawing and the CSV file. What coordinate system are you trying to use?

If you are creating a Surface from a large XYZ point file. Don't import the points. Add the file directly to your Surface.
