I don't know how Dave did it. But I opened the 10SGD.prj file in notepad and read it from there.

There are 2 files a J2W and a JGW that go with the two flavors of rasters.

I created a new drawing and set the correct system. Then typed MAPIINSERT, browsed to the folder I had unzipped the files into, selected the JP2 file and hit OK. The image above is a screen shot of the contents of the folder I unzipped the files to. BTW The 2 red blobs to the left indicate raster files.

The folder contains everything from an ESRI project and not all pertains to brining a raster into Civil 3D.

I’m having trouble with simply inserting a jpg with the mapiinsert command...and not sure how to use the other files that download from the national map viewer. Thanks,

You should have gotten a .JPW (JPEG World) file in the download. That file should be in the same folder as the .jpg prior to insertion. If you still have trouble. Post with details on what goes wrong with the insert and which tiles your downloading from national map.

Mike,

Working OK for me. Be sure to start with a Metric Drawing and assign it a UTM83-10 Coordinate System. MAPIINSERT will drop one of those JP2 images in right on the chile.

Mike,

"...how did you know of the coordinate system UTM83-10 metric..."

I did same as Allen. Always look for a PRJ or World File to find out what Coordinate System the data is in.

PROJCS["NAD_1983_UTM_Zone_10N",GEOGCS["GCS_North_American_1983",DATUM["D_North_American_1983",SPHEROID["GRS_1980",6378137.0,298.257222101]],PRIMEM["Greenwich",0.0],UNIT["Degree",0.0174532925199433]],PROJECTION["Transverse_Mercator"],PARAMETER["False_Easting",500000.0],PARAMETER["False_Northing",0.0],PARAMETER["Central_Meridian",-123.0],PARAMETER["Scale_Factor",0.9996],PARAMETER["Latitude_Of_Origin",0.0],UNIT["Meter",1.0]]

Now on to the other data. You can make a surface in C3D with either the ArcGrid (ADF) data or the IMG data, but the GridFloat folder has ESRI proprietary files in it that won't work in C3D without using third-party software to "convert" into something useful.

Thank you, Dave. How do you view the data in the prj or world files?

Also, is there a convenient way to translate the data into another coordinate system? Say, nad27 in feet?

I'm not Dave, but you can read the prj or world files with a standard text editor or Notepad.

The only way to translate the image to another coordinate system is with Raster Design or using the Map3D tools to attach and query a dwg is inserted into but that does not change the image only the dwg that it is in.

Open any PRJ or World File with any text editor.

No easy answer here. Depends on the data and how you bring it in to AutoCAD. Sometimes it's not possible in C3D and you have to resort to third party software, like QGIS, Microdem, MapWindow, GeoViewer, OpenEV, Global Mapper, etc...
