esc isn't mapped to anything. from what I've read it's handled by windows somehow.

I was able to get the F1 key to function as a cancel, but it acts the same way as my real esc key.

I'm having an annoying issue. Anytime I select an object that brings up different ribbon options (pipes, feature lines, etc) then hit esc the ribbon steals the keyboard focus and prevents me from being able to type in commands until I've clicked with the mouse.

Example. I click a feature line, hit esc to clear my selection, try typing the letter "o" and the ribbon changes to the output tab.

I want the focus to stay off the ribbon so when I type "o" in the above situation it appears in the command line.

I selected a pipe, hit escape, and pressed "r" a few times. Notice that since "r" isn't a menu shortcut for anything it displays what each of them are along the ribbon. Then i adjust the view a bit and hit "r" some more and it types just fine.

Ok, this is going to sound weird; but is your 'Alt' key sticking? can you get a new keybord? I read this https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-use-shortcut-keys-to-change-between-ribbon-tabs-in-AutoCAD.html

I have menu bar on, but if I selected an object and held atl while hitting esc it wouldn't change ribbons back.

Try this line of reasoning and try to debug the situation.

I tried switching keyboard without luck. In the process I confirmed that out other workstations don't have this issue. I tried turning the menubar on and that didn't change anything. I also noticed that our other workstation had the command bar docked differently, so I replicated that and it didn't do anything either. I also checked all of the selection preferences under options and those were the same.

I get the same thing in C3D 2017 (and did in 2015 & 2016). The way out for me is to click in the drawing area, which opens up a selection box, which I have to escape out of. it interrupts my production flow and annoys me, too. I always figured it was one of those ways that autoCrud has gotten worse and there's nothing to do about it except waste time getting back to where you want to be.

Autocad support contacted me. They suggested to reset my custom user setting to default, which I did. It fixed the issue until I started putting things back to the way I like them. I discovered that the problem relates to the properties panel. If I have it docked then I have the issue. If i have it closed or floating then the issue goes away. I even replicated it on another machine. I responded to the support message with this information. No word back on if that is a bug, or designed that way, but for now I can just float the properties panel near where I like it and everything works fine.

Thank you everyone for the help. If I get more information from support I'll update this.

I get the same crap in 2016.

If I select an object that triggers a contextual ribbon tab like a Civil object, Xref, etc., when I press escape from the selection, the ribbon still has focus when it returns to the prior tab.

The other thing, is that there is a significant delay after selecting any object.
