Transform or rotate and move - that is the question!

Hi all,

Now that I have your attention, I am seeking your great advice once again and truly appreciate your effort.

My situation:

Engineering has proceeded with their design (from conceptual) and it is not on the same basis as our survey work. I would like to rotate and move the design to the survey drawing's basis. There are common points (this is an old project that has been brought back to life).

I thought I would seek the advice from those that know before I proceed. I have copied engineering's drawing and am going to experiment. I tried to search for information and came across a transformation process using Map 3D. I will pursue that if necessary. My goal is not to mess up the Civil 3D objects - surface, sections, profiles, etc. At some point the surveyors will have to field stake the design and would rather continue to use the survey basis.

What would you recommend?

I would strongly advise you to NOT transform that. NOTE: I am making quite a few assumptions that I probably should not be making.

Is engineering's file on a known coordinate system? If not, what makes you think that you should transform it? (There is no tone intended in this question, at all. If there is something making you think that you should transform it, that would be helpful information in trying to answer.)

I would say your best option here would be to go to the drawing settings and then transform tab and select the common point in the engineeringdrawing and provide the surveyors coordinate and rotation if necessary. This way any points credited could be exported in either system. (you need to set a coordinate system even if your not using one)

Hi Norman,

Unfortunately, Civil objects cannot transform well. What you can try as a workaround is that to start and finish design in Civil 3D on the basemap which is in the correct coordinate system. When this is not possible then any Civil objects need to be exported to AutoCAD and then transformed using the original Map query method.

I could be wrong but I would just ALIGN with common anchors and use .xy filter.

If you do this with an alignment: any corridor/ sections should go for the ride upon rebuild.

If Fg is fl grading with cogo points ALIGN the data not the surface.

I would start with eg and work forward in the design order

Negative on the Eng drawing on a coord system. I have set control on the project and am anticipating having to either collect more data or stake points from the design. It just feels better having both on same basis. Appreciate your response.

I have in experimenting moved the design and surfaces and all went ok except for a corridor that was made into a surface and pasted into another. It seems the corridor insists on staying where it is.

Open to any suggestions.

Are you sure you moved the parent alignment and not a data shortcut alignment?

What you are suggesting sounds like the preferred method. I must confess I am not that familiar with that command or the filtering. I will research that and perhaps you could elaborate?

Would I apply the ALIGN command to the design objects and select common points for source and destination?
