Creating cross sections

Hi Guys,

I posted on AutoCAD forum but was told to post here instead.

I have a topographical survey which has been produced using 3d polyline.

I am looking to cut a section and get the levels produced in a graph automatically.

Please where do I start?

That's quite a large request! But if you google the Bold phrases and work through them you'll be on the right tracks.

You need to create a surface and add the 3D polylines as breaklines.

You then need to create an alignment where you want to take a long section (road centreline?)

Then you need to create a surface profile from the alignment.

Then you need to create a profile view.

That will give you a long section view.

If you want cross sections along that alignment you need to create sample lines.

Then you can create section views.

Thank you Josh. I have been looking at youtube videos and am getting familiar with the terms.

Not a problem.

Actually.

If you have your home ribbon up you'll find all the "create" options with in the left hand half of the ribbon.

I created a surface on the topo and then just drew a poly line across where I wanted a cross section and done a quick profile, this showed the graph I wanted but I am not able to copy it

The quick profile is temporary.

If you create an alignment (in your case I'd use select create alignment from object and select the the polyline you've already made when the options box appears be sure to uncheck the add curves automatically down at the bottom (frommemory)

then create a profile view from that you'll have a permanent profile.

The quick profile is temporary. You can create ground cross sections as desired.

But still you cannot copy them since they have dynamic nature. Once you create the cross section export the dwg to auto cad. Then you can copy cross sections.

Note: Try to export the dwg with quick profile as well and see it works or not. I am not pretty sure.

Thanks all for help until now.

This is what I have done so far and this is where I am at.

-> Created a surface and added break lines.

-> Created alignment so under Alignments > Rails > alignments - (1) now

-> clicked on sample lines and clicked on sample line and it lets me move the cursor back and forth between the first alignment line.

-> produced a cross section as shown here https://ibb.co/e81ELQ

The cross section profile is correct but I want the graph to show levels at these 4 fours as shown in this picture https://ibb.co/nhVkS5

how do I do that? as the blue lines are my running rails.

I have all 4 lines selected as alignment already and the one thats showing as 113.754 is the first line i selected

If you select the section view the second button on the left of the ribbon should be add view labels - Offset and level.

then click on those points marked in blue.

What marks those blue locations?

do they exist as 3D polylines or something?

yes they exist as 3d polylines, they are the 4 running rails.

click on your section view.

Far right of the ribbon Project Object to section view select your 3D polylines and ensure the elevations column is set to by object

hopefully your default label style will show you the elevation if not select the label and change the style.
