Layer Unisolate

Using C3D 2016, the Layer Unisolate button (command LAYUNISO) located on the express toolbar doesn't "work" correctly. It does not restore your drawing layers to the previous state. The firm where I work uses tabs inside of the drawing (which I don't prefer) and when you go to other tabs for such viewports as DEMO, or your LAYOUT tab the entire viewport is completely changed and did not restore. The thing is, I may also not even be working within that particular viewport. This is causing a great deal of problems (and valuable time lost) especially if I have a drawing that might have many viewports in them. I'll then have to go back into each drawing and set up the viewport again, layers on/off, frozen, etc. I assume that this is a cad error of some sort and maybe someone knows what is causing this. A search of LAYUNISO didn't offer any results. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

LAYUNISO has not been part of Express Tools for over 10 years.

If it's really on the ET toolbar, then maybe it's calling an old version of this command?

ok, let me revise, it's the right command, LAYUNISO, but it's on the Layers II toolbar, so you may be correct. I used to be a part of the Express menu but now it's a part of the Autocad toolbars. Either way, it doesn't work as it's supposed to. I've checked the usuals, VISRETAIN, and the settings in the LAYISO commands etc. No effect on the outcome.

are you turning layers off or locking them when isolating? try switching the option and see if unisolate works better then. It seems to work for me.

It seems strange that it's altering VP Layer states.

I use this command (AecSelectSimilar) and it's partner, (_.ISOLATEOBJECTS) isolate quite a bit during work. I use it to isolate items that I've selected using the select similar command, AecSelectSimilar, which is found most conveniently on the right click mouse button. Then _.ISOLATEOBJECTS turns off all the other layers and objects so I can work or wblock the isolated items. Then with a right click the command (_.UNISOLATEOBJECTS) is used to turn back on all the objects and layers. I don't think this is the same command that you are using but that's the way I isolate items.

The layer isolate command might not be safe to use when working in paperspace thru the viewport into model space. That would be one area that I would look at to see if it's causing your issues.

I don't have a layiso button on my express tools ribbon, I do have a objects isolate button on the lower right corner, it's the icon with a square, circle, triangle on it. You might try that command and have better results.

See this link for more information on Isolate:

http://help.autodesk.com/view/CIV3D/2017/ENU/index.html?caas=caas%2Fvideo%2Fyoutube%2Flesson%2F144310-courseId-100329.html

I regularly use LAYISO and LAYUNISO in 2015 with no problems.

I prefer them over Isolate Object as I can still turn on and off additional layers by using the -LA command at the command line. Object Isolate uses a mysterious method of controlling visibility that does not use layer on/off tools.

User 'martin100' mentioned that using LAYUNISO affects viewports even when s/he is not working within a viewport. That's the root problem.

In 2015 that behavior does not occur: Using LAYUNISO in modelspace has no effect on any viewports. With a viewport active, LAYISO acts just like VPFREEZE, which will dramatically alter the layer visibility within a viewport. I don't believe that is his/her issue.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

C3D 2016 is "new" to us. This is a very small firm and we had server problems for a very long time (another issue). So, we're using the C3D 2016 now and I've never had an issue at all using the ISOLATE/UNISOLATE from the Layers II buttons, but again, now it's what the fool is going on here? Idk, maybe, it's a glitch of some sort or maybe I'll just reload the program and see if it resolves the issue.

The program files are the program files. They don't change, so unless you are having a major meltdown due to a virus or something, a reinstall is not really going to do anything.

Your user profile on the other hand is very subject to becoming "corrupt" for lack of a better term, and I've seen countless cases where resetting this "fixes" oddball things going on.

Have you tried this step?

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad-civil-3d/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Resolving-user-specific-issues-by-resetting-AutoCAD-Civil-3D-2016.html

You can simulate this also, by having a new, different, user log on to the PC, and use ACAD under this new profile.

I'm pretty sure I found the problem. I'm back in this dwg today so I've taken a few mins to try a few things.

Under the LAYER PROPERTIES MANAGER, there is a SETTINGS button at the bottom. Click on it and another dialog box pops up that says LAYER SETTINGS.

Under LAYER SETTINGS, there is an option under "Isolate Layer Settings". Under "In paper space viewport use", I changed the setting from "off" to "VP Freeze" and everything appears to be working correctly.

See the attached image. Thanks for the responses.
