Import points from CSV file inserts points in incorrect location.

Ok lets cover the bases. I have been working with Civil 3d days and have done this process hundreds of times in my career. Yes I have purged, audited and cleaned regapps before coming here.

The original files should have no transformation. It was surveyed by a field crew working in the same system we use. And also I use the same point file format I have used forever.

When the file is imported this time however, the group of points were shifted to the south about 1.6 kilometers from where it should be. Now usually when something like this happens I attribute it to a survey error, wrong benchmark or whatever. So I check an inserted point coordinate with 'ID' and cross reference it with the CSV file, there is a discrepancy.

I manually enter the correct coordinate in, and its where it should be, not where the point is. So I click on the point and check its properties. Oddly enough under properties, is a field called Northing and one called Easting, but its not the coordinates of where the point is inserted, its where it should have been inserted.

A coworker tried to solve the issue and was able to get it to work by defining the coordinate system, changing the import file format to use grid coordinates instead. I tried to replicate his results to no avail. In my reasoning it really should not have an effect, but I am at a loss what to do next.

Sounds a little like you may have a transformation set in the drawing. Go the the DRAWING SETTINGS and check the transforms tab.?

Otherwise I'd need a drawing and point file to see whats up.

Try setting your UCS back to WORLD and inserting the point again.

No. Can someone else chime in?

I say this because anyone who knows how to insert points from a CSV KNOWS that the UCS command is has no bearing AT ALL.

I just had something just as confusing happen with importing an FBK file. The points came in over 20' East and a little North of the target. Seriously weirding me out!

With the limited amount of information you've provided I'm taking a guess.... Provide a drawing/point file or set your UCS to world and give that I try.

You suggest that I check my UCS, yet that has absolutely no effect, and you
should be ASHAMED to give that response, and again you chose not to read my comment and
suggest it anyways.

I swear something changed! But all I ended up having to change was turn
off the drawing coordinate system!

Thanks, but it was that my drawing was set to NAD83, which it ALWAYS is. I
had to set it to NO coordinate system, do the import, then set back to
NAD83 Va South Feet.

So sorry, I wasn't trying to give you any advice... Nor would I ever
suggest a ucs issue with an experienced user. Either you are mixing me up
wuth someone else, or you are a bot my friend.

I really need help with this, but not yours, so please move along and stop suggesting stuff anyone with 1 month CAD experience would suggest. Im trying not to be insulting but you are making it really hard. Well, you still manged to do so

Please, with all due respect, your 'help' is not wanted. Please move along. I will also be sure to move along next time I see a post by you. We are all just end users, who get frustrated with the software, too, but also volunteer to come here and try to help as best we can. The one you just asked to 'move along' typically has the best and quickest answers for these types of issues.

And suggesting the UCS has anything to do with my problem is like saying what color is the font on the point label. Yes strange things happen, but if you want to group yourself in with him and ask dumb questions that have nothing to do with my issues, go right ahead.

Check your survey database settings, check the coordinate system.

Check your drawing coordinate system to ensure they match.

Check your units which should obviously be tied to whatever coordinate system you are supposed to be on.

I have seen a few odd imports in my time with Civil3d and one of these two are usually the culprit. Sometimes changing them from an incorrect setting to a correct setting doesn't even work. In those instances i have had to start my drawing over with the the correct settings prior to any importing. Thats about all I can offer up without your drawing and .csv Good luck.

Thanks for your response but again, there is no coordinate system assigned.

For small projects, such as the one I am referring to, I dont use the
survey database to import points, points are inserted using 'Points From
File"

And yes, the "Do coordinate transformation if possible" box was left
unchecked.

And BESIDES, can you name any coordinate transformations that would shift
points South by 1.6km? Because none where I live and work would apply to
this.

-Check your file, make sure the columns are right. PNEZD? etc.

-Check your import format.

-Try different / new drawing template.

If you are not using a coordinate system or survey database, should be WYSIWYG.

Yes, there are coordinate transformations that can make your points that far off.

-tried in both standard template and blank drawing.

The weird thing about it all is when the points are inserted in the wrong
place, its properties still say the northing and easting are correct, and
match the CSV file. When I do an autocad move command, the values also
change relative to the move.

Its like Northing and easating is a variable, that is independent of the
actual XY coordinate.
