The method with the alternative solver has to use only tet elements, so you are seeing a re-mesh and the first message. I am not sure why it will not run though, all I can suggest is that you share the model with me (CFZ file) and we can take a look.

It is possible that this analysis type simply is not supported with the new solver yet, I cannot see it listed on the can or cannot list here yet and so I need to check.

Thanks,

Transient Natural Convection with Joule Heating not solving with Scalable solver

Hello,

I have a completed project in CFD 2016 where I ran a transient natural convection analysis with joule heating (Voltage and current specified, and the material has a temperature dependent resistivity). I decided to test out the scalable solver in CFD 2017 so I converted the CFD file after opening in CFD 2017, and selected Solve, changed the Computer to Scalable Solver, and hit Solve.

I get an error saying "Only a single current or voltage boundary condition was found". Yet I go back to the model setup and it clearly shows I have a current and voltage Boundary condition on two separate faces of the model.

Can someone help? Why does the Scalable solver have a problem with the model?

Hi,

Did you see the messages in the output bar at the bottom? Are they correct?

Does it run OK in 2017 with the standard solver?

Thanks,

Hi Jon,

Thanks for responding.

Did you see the messages in the output bar at the bottom? Are they correct? Yes I saw them and they are incorrect. There is only 1 material with Joule Heating applied, and its the standard value for High Resistivity Stainless Steel

Does it run OK in 2017 with the standard solver? Yes, I just ran 2 time steps with 3 inner iterations (the full 400 iteration simulation takes a while) successfully. The standard solver did not complain about the resistivity.

I switched it back to the Scalable solver, and when the job starts I see the following message in the message bar ((see attached screenshot), but I never made any changes to the setup, I am unsure as to why its generating a new mesh with tets or triangle elements in the boundary layer. When it was done meshing, the Scalable solver threw up the Resistivity error after 0 time steps

Okay. Is there any performance difference to e aware of with the Scalable solver switching to tet elements that we should be aware of? (i.e. how does it impact the results?)

Is there an FTP site I can send the share file to? It contains customer models so I cannot share it on a pulic forum.

Thanks.

As far as I am aware, the results should still be OK 🙂

Do you have a subscription with us at all? If you do, we can move to a 1:1 case and work out of the public domain. Otherwise, we would need to continue to work here really.
