Revit objects rotated in BIM 360

Good day,

I am posting on behalf of my customer. He has indicated that in Revit, his foundations are indicated correctly (see image Revit Foundation), but when he looks at the same 3D model in BIM 360, certain of the foundations have rotated (see image BIM 360 Foundation).

This is a bit of a concern, especially given that the contractor will be referencing the drawings and 3D model during construction phase.

Is there a known reason for why certain model elements get rotated? If yes, what does my customer need to do to correct this?

Are you able to share a sample model, or invite me to the customer's project?
The development team would need a sample to work with in order to get to the root cause of this issue.

I have spoken to my customer about this issue, and am unfortunately still awaiting a response. It seems that he will be sending me the Revit model, which I will upload to our hub. I will then invite your Dev team to our hub for further troubleshooting.

I have got confirmation from the customer that I can share the model. I have created a project on our hub, where I will add the model.

I am assuming it might be because of True North setting has been done on the Revit file.

Don’t you think one model has not set accurate location?

Hi @ysautodesklover , this issue goes back to January this year, and I never heard any further feedback from the customer. I also didn't get a satisfactory solution on the forums.

With regard to your point about true north, this I cannot confirm or deny. However, the images that were originally uploaded were from the same model. Just viewed in BIM 360 vs in Revit.

Hi, is this sorted out? As I'm experiencing it too currently. The revit model in our server is fine, while the uploaded model in BIM360, some of the columns appears rotated.

Hi,

our developer team is aware of the issue. We have found the following cause and workaround:

Cause: The issue is caused by a corruption in the version history of the affected files. It is caused by a function that compares older versions with the latest uploaded version before the file is extracted.

Workaround: Usually, the affected files will extract correctly to a new folder. Please check if you can see the file correctly after uploading it as a new version 1 (respectively version 2 for cloud workshared files) to a new folder.

Please note: Copying or moving the file within BIM 360 will not have the same effect as uploading to a new folder. Please download the source file and upload to a new folder to make sure the file is extracted correctly.

If this works as expected:

Consider removing the history of the affected file from the affected folder. You might want to create a backup of the version history (by downloading the different versions to individual folders on your local machine) and confirm with the affected project members before doing so.

Our development team has already rolled out a solution that will prevent this type of corruption in version histories in the future.

We are experiencing the same issue on our project, but not only with Revit files... also with our federated Navisworks model, on which all coordination issues are attached. We would like to preserve the history of those issues. Any idea when this solution should be rolling out?

The issue has been fixed a long while ago. If you are still seeing similar problems, then I assume that it is a different cause. Please create a support ticket so that we can take a look at your specific models.

But the fix that was mentioned above actually works in my case as well. If I download the model locally and upload the same file to a different folder in BIM 360, there is no rotation. It does appear to be a very similar problem...

Ah. Okay. Then it appears to be the same issue.

The issue is caused by a corruption in the file history. The fix we provided will prevent file histories from becoming corrupted in the future. But it cannot "heal" existing corrupted file histories.

I'm afraid that you will need to re-create the file history of the affected files to resolve the problem in the affected folder. But this can only be done for non-cloud-workshared files. The steps are described in this article:

Thank you for the information.

My file being a Navisworks model, it is not cloud workshared (of course).

I understand how to recreate the version history... but wont I loose my issues in the model by deleting the file from BIM360?

Yes. You are right. This is another side effect that is not mentioned in the article. I will try to get that added to make other users aware of it.

I am currently not aware of another workaround or possibility to maintain the issues while healing the version history. I am really sorry for that.

You can file a support ticket to check if the development team has more options to heal the version history without removing the issue.

@jens.krause the issue keeps occurring in our Navisworks and Revit models, on a regular basis. I was under the impression that a fix was implemented to prevent the issue from happening again, but apparently it still is a problem...
