For the presentation of pipes in 2d plans within a project, we usually do the following:

1-We create an Ortho drawing, according to the company's staff.

2- In this created file, inside the model space, we insert a reference cad of the floor of the building, for example, 1st Floor.dwg. We prefer to insert the floor of the building drawn in 2D as an external reference.

3-In paper space, we create the new Ortho, with the command "New View".

4-We select the 3d files of pipes that we want to draw (they are in Plan 3D Drawings) and we select plant, scale, lines, etc and we give "OK".

5-Insert the new Ortho created. A view is created. The file is finished: We have in the drawing the pipes drawn in 2D and in the background, the floor of the building.

We did not want to include the 3D building to make the Ortho lighter.

Issue.

1-We make change or we continue drawing pipes in the piping 3D file.
When updating the Ortho view, the reference disappears, unfreeze its layers belonging to the Xref and therefore, we have to turn them on again.

Has anyone any solution for this?
WE DO NOT WANT THAT EACH TIME WE VIEW THE ORTHOS VIEWS, WE HAVE TO TUR ON THE MANUALLY THE LAYERS OF THE XREF.

I have some questions to your workflow:

You have mentioned that you have first started to create an ortho from your piping model and in this ortho drawing you have switched to model space to attach an XREF there. My question to you: Note that in a model space of an ortho drawing, you will see nothing as all geometry will be added to the layout. So, you attach an XREF to an empty model space? Correct?
If you insert an XREF to the model space, which is empty, the ortho view itself is scaled by a factor, by default 1:20. When you insert an XREF model to that model space, it will be inserted by default by 1:1. Because the ortho geometry is in 1:20 but your XREF is 1:1 and will be converted to 1:20 in ortho view, the XREF model is much to large for the ortho view and has to be rescaled. Is my description wrong?

My most important question is, why do you create an ortho already at the beginning. Why not modeling all in the model, xref the other models there and at the end create an orthographic drawing of them?

As you know, in some cases CAD allows you to work differently.
The correct way to work with the module Ortho is:
1-Create Ortho.dwg file
2- New view
3- Select 3D files (they are inside 3D drawings)
4- Select properties of lines, climbing, sight, etc.
5- Launch Ortho and insertion point and READY! Ortho performed.
Problems and some trick:
You do not always have the building or structure in 3D. For example, an industrial building made with Tekla, REVIT, in 3D.
NEED:
You need a Plane: This Plane is a Floor Plan, the building, the ship, and you want, for example, to show the equipment that is in its rooms and those that arrive at these equipment, for example.
How to do it?
- 3 FORMS
A) Describe lines above, the sentences with the information in 3D (the 3D file of the ship is presented within your project with the structure that you have provided in Tecla, Revit, etc.). You throw the ortho and you're done.
Problem: the geometry of the ship (solids or surfaces) and the size of it, the ortho will take a long time. And you only need the plant of it. Too much investment of time. The orography has to calculate the geometry of the ship to project it.
B) All the same, but it eliminates the files of structures in the creation of the Ortho. Click here to see a new file of CAD. Creas Plant 1º.dwg. You include it in your files 3D drawings in P3D.
Problem: The creation of ortho takes a long time, it goes crazy because it is difficult to perform a 2d (ortho) of 2d objects.
C) This is a trick!
You create the Ortho.dwg file.
You go to a model space, there as an external reference to the file of the floor of the building you need, 1st Floor. This is an external reference inserted, okay? Fin.
You go to a paper space, create new view in Orto module, select 3D files that you need (pipes and equipment) and generate the Orto.

Result: the ortho is generated and you get as a result the projection of the Ortos objects generated in a short time, since the 2D objects of the external reference are not calculated in the Ortho.
Issue:
When you make changes to a 3D file that includes the Ortho (for example, modify piping) and update the Ortho view, the final result in the window will be that the layers of the external references will be turned off. Then you have to manually re-light your layers or create a Layer State Manger to do it with a single click.

I think that due to the programming of the Ortho module for Plant 3D this is so.

I ASKED IF THERE IS ALMOST ANY VARIABLE THAT AVOID THIS.

Obviously, the Ortho module in P3D must improve (you have to look at Revit, it's much better at that!)

did you find a solution for this issue?

I would like to add a floor plan as well in my ortho view, but not directly choosing the floor plan model in the otrho environment. I would like to add the floor plan as Xref in teh model space of the Ortho drawing. I have no problems with the scale, the x-refed floor plan is overlaid with the lines created by the ortho engine in the model space. My problem is, i cannot see the xref lines in the paper space. What am I doing wrong?

Inside an ortho view window, from the layer manager check that the layers relating to the Xref, inside the window, are active.
