The client is looking for something like this,

but as you will appreciate changing the block for the flow arrow would only work at the downstream end.

the "specification" is that the "T" connections are to have a Dot and the crossings are not to have a gap or loop.

This is odd to me but that is what they are trying to achieve, we can always create a 3-way valve-type block but that would have to be placed.

Any ideas?

Hi everyone,

I am a new user to AutoCAD, using it to draw P&IDs following ISO standards. I am initially using a trial version of AutoCAD 2021. I have found that for some reason the default shape of the Flow Arrow on lines is different from what I see on any other P&IDs (please refer to screenshots) and is typical in industry. Does anyone know a reason why this might be or how I can solve this quickly without editing the default flow arrow block shape.

Many thanks in advance.

Kai

(Default ISO flow arrow on my AutoCAD)

(Typical 'Filled style' Flow Arrow)

For P&ID abilities, you are testing the wrong variant of AutoCAD: instead of plain AutoCAD (and doing it the hard way), you need to test AutoCAD Plant3D instead https://www.autodesk.com/products/autocad/included-toolsets/autocad-plant-3d?plc=ACDIST&term=1-YEAR&support=ADVANCED&quantity=1

If you set your project up with ISO, the flow arrows are correct. The other arrows you are wanting are flow arrows for PIP standards.

Thank you very much - that makes perfect sense.

The confusion arose due to ISO 10628-1 2014 "Diagrams for the chemical and
petrochemical industry" showing example P&IDs where the flow arrow heads were the same as in PIP standards, see screenshot. According to AutoCAD this ISO standard, alongside some others, were used for the integrated symbology.

I have frequently run across this kind of issues especially when dealing with client drawings and standards. It is interesting that this shows up in the ISO standard its self.

Thank you for the tutorial it has been very useful.

I have a question about the possibility of being able to change the arrow style with a substitute option.

This comes about from a client asking if it is possible to have connection dots where the lines meet at a "T", similar to the method used in Electrical schematics. As I can't see a way to add this in the Schematic lines setting (We only seem to have the option for changing the gap or loop) I was wondering if it might be possible to use the substitute option similar to when placing/changing valves?

Any ideas would be very welcome.

Kind regards

Andy

Im not sure I understand what you are trying to do, but if you wanted to change the flow arrow to something different all together, you could always put in a different block

With my knowledge of plant and the data structure I can't see how it is possible, AutoCAD Electrical uses this function/format OOTB but I can only see a reference to how lines will cross (gap or loop) in the Project Setup

As previously mentioned I can imagine that it might be possible to creat a version of a 3 way valve but that is not ideal as it would require the designer to place an icon at all the intersections. I have expressed the opinion that I have never seen this requirement in PID before but it seemed to be a client "standard" that my client is expected to use.
