Announcing the new AutoCAD web app!

Today, we are thrilled to introduce the AutoCAD web app, included with your AutoCAD 2019 or AutoCAD LT 2019 subscription.

You may have seen the previous iterations of a web-based AutoCAD, but the new AutoCAD web app is like nothing that’s come before; we’ve rebuilt the app from the ground up by combing the AutoCAD codebase with the cutting edge of web browser technology.

With no install required, you can literally use AutoCAD from anywhere, on any laptop, as long as you have an internet connection and a web browser. The AutoCAD web app is not a substitute for the desktop application, but rather an extension of it, and we’ve designed it to help you complete key workflows when you’re away from your desk. You can access tools like PLINE, DIM, MTEXT, OFFSET, and TRIM in a simplified web interface.

AutoCAD web mobile vs Mobile App vs AutoCAD LT?

a bit like that:

Not likely to happen since they Web/Mobile apps are very limited in use and the marketing department at Autodesk is in full over-selling mode.

AutoCAD LT is a desktop version of desktop AutoCADwithout LISP, VLX, VB, solid modeling or rendering abilities (among a few other things).

AutoCADWeb and AutoCADMobile are minor subsets of a basic CAD package with some very basic abilities only in a webbrowser/mobile app respectively.

This screenshot explains what both of the latter apps are able to do,don'tread more into any ability beyond this image. No fonts beyond Simplex, no xrefs, no block libraries, no customization, no macros, these are not meant to be your sole cad solution, just an adjacent-use for when you are away from your desktop setup and need to add a few simple things to a drawing.

Hey Geoffrey,

The AutoCAD web app is a new part of the AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT subscription package, so it’s really more of a complement to an AutoCAD LT subscription rather than a compare/contrast product. As Mike said above, “the AutoCAD web app is not a substitute for the desktop application, but rather an extension of it.”

If you have a subscription to AutoCAD (or LT) 2019, you get features like 2D drafting and editing tools, annotation tools, and the ability to manage layers and create new drawings on both the web and mobile apps.

If you’re not on a subscription, you can still upload drawings to web and mobile, and view drawings, view object properties and layers, and measure in the drawing, but the drawing tools like CIRCLE, PLINE, TRIM, ROTATE are only available if you’re on subscription.

What happened to the "saveas" function where you could save the uploaded dwg to previous versions and dxf files?

Is this a bug in the new design or is it a new "feature" ?

Saving to previous DWG versions via AutoCAD web is not currently possible. You are not alone with your request and the Team is aware of the desire by customers such as yourself for this functionality.

Hi there,

Thanks for your interest in the AutoCAD web app.

Unfortunately, the student license for AutoCAD does not yet include the web app. You can still open the web app with a student license, but you won’t yet be able use any of the drawing and editing tools.

Hello,

Internet speed is a definite factor in the overall AutoCAD Web experience. This mostly effects startup and drawing open times. Once you have a drawing opened the network speed is less important.

Hi Michelle,

Right now, the AutoCAD web app doesn't allow you to export PDFs from layouts. But layout creation and Plot to PDF are some of the highest items on our Roadmap. Please keep checking back to see what's new, as the web app is still evolving.

Ok, so what are you trying to accomplish with this web app? It seems to be yet another version of all of the online tools that have come before and with the same speed and stability issues and this is using a Gigabit internet connection.

I can't open drawings that I was working on at work because they haven't been uploaded. This can't be used out at a lot of job sites because it requires an active internet connection, so what is this designed to do?

this web app don't replace autocad.

any web apps need intrnet on default.

If you want work offline behind the office, use mobile app for tablets and smartphones.
These Web and mobile apps use for review, littlebit edit and discussion.

Main task you still must do in the autocad desktop.

That still doesn't answer the question:

What is the purpose of the web app? Why does it exist? What problem(s) does it hope to solve?

Right now it seems like Autodesk is building it because they can, but haven't stopped to consider if they should. And honestly, I can't see a viable use case for it at this point, so why is Autodesk assigning limited resources to developing this tool when those resources could be applied to making the desktop app even better?

Actual purpose: access to view and edit dwg
Purpose in the future: migration from desktop to cloud not only Autocad, but all programs.

Web App is the first step for future offerings and software shifts: ask your question again in 10-15 years when the offerings are mature and fully realized and the infrastructure from others is built.

Otherwise right now it makes no sense.

If you want to know more, buy 15% stock in Autodesk, get yourself a seat on the board, and all will be revealed LOL

does an api to connect with the autocad web app exist? I would like to connect a cloud based tool via this api to the web app.
