Can't place viewports on sheets

I am having trouble placing viewports on sheets. I have tried to drag and drop views onto the sheet, but they come in as xrefs instead of viewports. I have also tried to place a model space view on a sheet, but the "place on sheet" button is greyed out.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

MVIEW did not work. I can't place any viewports on a sheet.

What does "did not work" mean, expand the commandline to more than one line tall and post the exact error message please.

I messed around with MVIEW and was able to get it to work. However, I needed to go to the model space and xref the view into the model space and then use MVIEW on the paper space in order to create a viewport. Why am I not able to "drag and drop" views onto paper space and have the viewport automatically created? Is there a setting that I need to change?

Viewports in layouts are just windows for viewing content in modelspace: and they are DWG file specific.

If you took your bedroom window and move it to the living room (assuming you could) the view from the bedroom would not come along with the window, would it. Same for viewports.

Same if you took your bedroom window over to your parents' farm house out in the country (aka different DWG file): your bedroom view is gone.

Does that explain the concept better?

I understand your analogy. What confuses me is that I can not place model space views on a sheet by right-clicking and using "place on sheet". I also can not drag and drop model space views onto sheets like I have been able to do a thousand times before.

So this is a problem with all projects and files, or just this one?

it has been a problem with all projects and files over the last week or so. it worked fine prior to that which makes me think there is a setting that I messed up. I did uninstall ACAD and reinstall and that did not fix it.

I found this forum and this workaround does work for me but it is a giant pain. There has to be a way to get ACAD to work properly.
