I had Geo Location maps on AutoCAD before the upgrade to 2024. I am able to initiate the procedure to bring a map in, but get thwarted by a message saying the credentials are invalid. I also got Map3D installed and there is not even a palette button to bring in a Geo Location Map. Does anyone know how to get the Geo Location back?

Hi @cwkbpa

AutoCAD Map3D needs to know where on Earth you want you want your map.

Use MAPCSASSIGN command then assign a projected coordinate system to your map (don't assign a geographic coordinate system), then turn on an Online Map such as Bing Hybrid aerial imagery. If you don't assign a coordinate system at all, Bing maps won't be available in your drawing. If you assign one incorrectly (or assign the wrong one) Bing will appear and your basemap might look correct, the coordinates, though, won't be accurate.

<<You can tell whether a coordinate system is projected or geographic by looking under the 'Definition Type' column, P=projected whereas G=geographic.>>

1. Enter MAPCSASSIGN on command line=>highlight an appropriate projected Coordinate System=>Click ASSIGN button. (You can use the SEARCH function to search for your Coordinate System.)

Image-1

2. Go to Geolocation Tab=>Online Map Panel=>Turn on Map Hybrid.

Image-2

3. The Bing logo that's displayed in the lower right corner means you have a valid internet connection to Bing Maps. If you don't see the logo, Bing won't be available to use as a basemap in your drawing. The red geomarker (looks like a red bicycle wheel with red spokes) is the center of your 'assigned coordinate system' and the online map you've just added extends a little beyond the extents of your assigned CS. (That's why you need to 'assign' the correct CS.....because if you assign the wrong one, your imagery won't be in the spot you really want.) You may need to zoom-out to find the geomarker in modelspace. Once found, you can use your mouse to zoom and pan to navigate to your site using Bing Hybrid labels as your guide.Image-3

NOTE:

If you are adding Bing aerial imagery as a basemap after you've drawn your linework and your lines don't match the background imagery, it's more than likely your linework wasn't georeferenced correctly in the first place. Also, make sure your drawing is in the World Coordinate System (WCS). If you are using a custom coordinate system, Bing won't be accurate.

The geolocation tab does not appear by default. You need to assign a coordinate system in order for the tab to be present.

Which CS have you assigned to your drawing and what command or procedure did tou use to assign it? Can you name it so someone in the forum can replicate the situation and troubleshoot your issue?

Hi @cwkbpa

It might be your linework is far away from UTM83 Zone 17. It’s so far awaaayy it’s not even within the limits of UTM83- Zone 17.

You can try this experiment, it’ll only take 2 minutes.

Open a brand new, clean imperial template and assign UTM83-17F.

Go to Geolocation tab=>Online map panel=>Change map Off to Map Hybrid.

Using mouse wheel zoom-out until you see the red geomarker. It looks like a bicycle wheel with red spokes.

Zoom-in using mouse wheel to zoom and pan then navigate to your site using the map labels as your guide. When you get there, you may, if you wish, draw a rectangle to surround your site.

Back in your original drawing=> select ALL objects=>right click and copy to clipboard using 0,0 as the BASEPOINT.

Back to the new drawing=>Right click and Paste contents of clipboard making sure to paste at 0,0.

If the pasted linework is NOT consistent with the imagery, then (A) your original drawing wasn’t drawn in the correct spot or (B) the original isn’t referenced against UTM83-17F (it’s actually referenced to another coordinate system). If it is consistent with the imagery then you’re good to go.

<<If I were to guess, Id say it’s not referenced to a UTM projection. Try using State Plane projection instead.>>

Would it be possible to upload an actual screenshot of the window that appears after entering MAPCSASSIGN on the command line?

No, not a description of what appears…..a genuine screenshot.

Make sure you’re entering MAPCSASSIGN while you’re in Map3D, not plain vanilla AutoCad.

Hmmm… I’m wondering whether if there’s a problem with your coordinate system’s NAD83 datum.

Have you tried using WGS84 datum? Run this experiment:

Instead of assigning UTM83-17F assign UTM84-17N. Then turn on Bing aerial imagery.

This drawing, due to its assign CS, will be in meters, not feet. I know it’s not the right units, it’s merely trying to narrow down where the issue might be.

Go to

C/ProgramData/Autodesk

Do you have more than one folder name Geospatial Coordinate Systems?

Do the folders have a suffix, i.e. Geospatial Coordinate Systems 14.01 and 14.02? (Your numbers may vary.)

The folder named 14.01 is the old and 14.02 is the new. You can tell by comparing the 'Date Modified' columns in each folder.

You might have corrupted .CSD files.

Assuming the old CSDs are good and the new ones are bad, copy all .CSD files from the old folder and paste them into the new folder so the old overwrites the new.

Yes, There is only one of those files there. It is a 14.10 suffix though. The old PC has two. 14.07 and 14.08

The one in the 14.10 folder could be corrupt.

AutoCAD increases that number (decimal part) with each installation (Map3D, Civil3D, AutoCAD, etc.) and each version (2020, 2021, 2022, etc.) You can try copying the 14.08 version and pasting it to over write the 14.10 version. You can put the current corrupt version in another folder named backup for the time being. That way you'll still have the old one if you still want it.

If you are saying the former version worked before but the new version doesn't, then the old version should work since you're rolling the CSD backwards. You can verify which CSD is old vs. new by looking at their respective dates in their folders.

Other than doing this, you probably new a new installation by your IT Dept and not by someone who simply uses Cad.

This problem I'm having is still going on. Nobody from any of my other posts was able to help me. I've been working with AutoDesk for the past 4 weeks without a resolution. At this point, it is believed that there is a problem with the program itself. I now have AutoCAD 2024 and Map3D 2024 and neither one works. My AutoCAD 2022 still works with no problem

Would it be possible to perform this experiment in Map3D? <<Don't use vanilla Cad.>>

Open brand new, Standard OOTB imperial template. <<This template should will have one layer named 0.>>

Go to command line=>MAPCSASSIGN=>In Search Box type 2248 then click enter=>Highlight MD83F EPSG 2248=>click Assign button.

In modelspace=>Draw a circle at X,Y coordinates (1301938.00, 448328.00), radius 200

Does Geolocation tab appear in the ribbon? Turn on Bing Hybrid=>Zoom extents. Where are you?
