google elevation data?

I have heard that there is some elevation data from google maps that is downloadable. I am in need of a large area of contours. I know I can get it from the National Map Viewer, but wondering if this comment about google is true? Anybody know anything? thanks

You'll need to install Google Earth Pro. I haven't used it, but here's where to go :

With Civil 3D you can use freely available GIS Contour data &colon;

thanks....I do have GE pro loaded, but have no idea how to extract elevation data. Anybody have any guidance they can give me?

You can also download the SRTM 1 arc second (30m resolution) digital elevations from the Earth Explorer at the USGS website. http://earthexplorer.usgs.gov/

I doubt Google Earth would have any data with greater resolution.

I saw the chosen solution and I was really desperate! Do they really suggest that procedure?

I can't believe you really have to "paint" on Google Earth!

Rather than wasting time on that stuff, I think it's way better to specify exactly for which points or the intervals to get elevations for an area...

Actually that's a "productivity" tool for my work, so I'm glad if it helps...
