Route Mapper Speed

This question resolves around The Construction and As-Built Alignment Sheets that are built with AutoCAD Civil 3D. We are doing hundreds of miles of processing with Route Mapper software and want to offload the process to another computer since the process takes so long.. Currently we have a Dell 7720 with Class 50 SSD, 32GB ram, and latest gen i7.

What can we do to speed up the process of the data set?

does Autocad take advantage of the multicore processors? is Xeon overkill?

NO so the best / fastest processor to run ACAD 201X is / was: Core i7 7700K / 6600K / 4790K !

I remember (beginning 2016) ... I had the great pleasure to test a special gamer PC based on the famous Core i7 4790K

with a NVidia GTX 980 TI and 32 Gb Ram and fast 512 Gb SSD !

!!! The Dream : the basic speed of the Core i7 4790K was 4.6 Ghz with a Turbo at 5.0 Ghz !!!

With ACAD 2016/2017 , REVIT 2016/2017 , InfraWorks : beautiful / marvellous / etc ...

well this is good info. we were looking at a precision desktop but you can only get Xeon processors as its listed. Plus we were looking at the P5000 card. Just trying to get serious horsepower but dont want to buy architecture that wont make a difference.

The 7920HQ is one the fastest Core i7 Mobile !

You are correct but we want to build a desktop to help with some of the load. that way when he is running hundreds of miles of piping data he has his laptop to keep working as the processing of that data takes a while and he does it often. So we are trying to build the right machine.

8th Gen processors are also released by Intel.

YES but the new Core i7 8700K (3.7-4.7 Ghz - 6 cores / 12 threads) will not be faster compared to the 7700K into a pure ACAD 201X environment !

The New 8700K will be my choice for Infraworks / 3DSMax / Maya / etc...

Even with Revit / Inventor / Navisworks, I could choice the excellent 7700K ?!

You are very helpful and I cant thank you enough.

what do you think about the P5000 card. PS we are suing ACAD Civil 3D and ESRI ArcGIS.

And what do you think is the max RAM that will be beneficial? I told ACAD we currently had 32 and asked what 64 would do. They said we would see an increase in performance by 1/4 to 1/6. So I was thinking like 128 or 192.

A P4000 even P2000 is OK into a pure ACAD environnent...

Concerning the memory ...
Check maximum memory used by the task ACAD.exe with your hugest DWG after running ALL your routines !

If more than 26 Gb used, you need more than 32 Gb memory... And so on...

I doubt that you could need more than 64 Gb ?!

Pat you are right we dont want to overkill and have resources unused. but we do want to get the best performance we can.

Im going to see if I can build one the way I want it. i7, P2000, 4000 or 5000, 64+ GB ram, M.2 SSD. if I can get this in a Dell then perfect.

1) So for the processor, you have 2 solutions (Core i7 or XEON) :

- Core I7 7700K (The fastest and the cheapest fastest) - 4.2-4.5 Ghz - 4 Cores / 8 Threads - 8 Mb cache

But this processor could be not available on HP, DELL, etc Workstations !?

Maybe the latest Core i7 8700K 8th generation : 3.7-4.7 Ghz - 6 Cores / 12 Threads - 12 Mb cache ... Is it available ?

- Latest XEONs E3 v6 (4 Cores / 8 Threads - 8 Mb cache) 1240/1245/1270/1275/1280

with a Basic Speed = 3.7-3.8 Ghz and Turbo = 4.1-4.2 Ghz ... Are they available ?

or Good Old :

- XEON 1630 E5 v4 (4 Cores / 8 Threads - 10 Mb cache) Speed = 3.7 Ghz - Turbo = 4.0 Ghz

or Good Old :

- XEON 1650 E5 v4 (6 Cores / 12 Threads - 15 Mb cache) Speed = 3.6 Ghz - Turbo = 4.0 Ghz

2) Graphic Card : maybe the latest P2000 Series or the P4000 Series BUT NOT the P5000 !

My choice (not available with HP, DELL, etc : the famous GeForce GTX 1070 TI or 1080 TI)

3) Very fast SSD (512 Gb or more) + maybe fast SATA classic HD (1 / 2 Tb)

4) 64 Gb : 4x16 Gb Ram

5) If you are ADMIN of your PC, you can "boost a little bit" AutoCAD 201X with some tricks :

- Launch ACAD 201X without any DWG loaded - If necessary unload "Drawing1" ... Wait 30 secs ...

- Windows Task Manager - Select ACAD.exe - Right Button - Define Priority = HIGH

- Then load DWGs ... and RUN ...

- And you must REDO at every launch !

In theory you could have a Launch AutoCAD Batch file with : START /HIGH ... ( But it seems to be NOK )

Yes I think I can get the i7 7700K, not sure about 8th Gen yet.

Can get Xeon

Graphics card will have to go with P series as I cant get the other from them. Curious why not P5000?

Can get RAM NP

Definitely high speed SSD. Have you tried running in a Raid0 config by chance?

Just confirmed that I cant get the i7 Gen 7 or 8 in the box I want. only Xeon and this is the one they chose: Intel Xeon Gold 5122 3.6GHz, 3.7GHz Turbo, 4C, 10.4GT/s
2UPI, 16.5M Cache, HT (105W) DDR4-2666 1st

I might just have to build this box myself.

So I just configured a Precision Workstation 3000 series with the 7700K, 64GB ram, P4000 and M.2 512 SSD. So that might be the ticket.
