excel sheet as an xref?

Is there any possible way to set an excel
file as an xref? Also, is there a way to import
an excel file so that it can be edited?

Not aware of ability to xref an Excel file.
However, there is a good program called Excel to DXF available at

OLE linking is perhaps what you are looking for. HELP can
explain.

Use OLE with caution. I inserted an Excel worksheet into LT 2002 and now get an error message which says "OLE to HDI subsystems have been corrupted. Please reinstall". I get this message when I try to plot to a file.I'll post more information after determining what has happened.

I think OLE and Image files have a problem printing to HDI
drivers: Windows Drivers for your print/plot devices may be a
better solution.

Just make sure that you only have one sheet on your Excell document that you insert on your drawing, otherwise you have to first open the Excell document on the place where you want it to show in your drawing and then save it and close it and then open your drawing.

Here's how to XREF an excel spreadsheet into your autocad sheet:

1. Go to the DRAW tab

2. Click TABLE

3. Select "From a data link" in the insert options

4. Click the data link manager dialogue box

5. Select "Create a new Excel Data link"

6. Name the XREF file something

7. Browse and select the file (Path type: full path)

8. Click all the OKs and it is now XREF'ed into your cad file

To add, depending on your AutoCAD LT release you can use the following resources to help.

About Linking Excel Spreadsheets

By linking to an Excel spreadsheet, you can include information from an entire worksheet, or part of a worksheet, referred to as a named range. Using the Link External Data dialog box, you can:

Specify a data link by selecting an XLS file to which the extracted data from the drawing will be linked
Match the extracted drawing data and the spreadsheet data
Select the columns in the XLS file to merge with the extracted drawing data

On the Refine Data page, you access the Link External Data dialog box; you can set up a link to an entire Excel spreadsheet, or to a range of rows and columns, to the extracted data.

Before you can link a spreadsheet, Microsoft Excel needs to be installed on the same computer on which the data extraction is performed. If Microsoft Excel is not installed, or if the XLS file is not saved locally on the computer that is performing the data extraction, a data link cannot be established.

If a linked spreadsheet has been changed, such as a row or column has been added, the table in your drawing can be updated accordingly using the DATALINKUPDATE command. Likewise, if a change is made to the table in the drawing, the linked spreadsheet can be updated using the same command.

Note: To delete a data link, use the DATALINK command. You cannot delete a data link from the External References Palette.
