DWG file is write protected???

Everytime I try to save one of my files it says i cannot as the DWG FILE IS WRITE PROTECTED. I know i'm a novice and don't use CAD much, but i have never done this to any of my files, So how can a take of the write protection?

Either save them using a different name, or using Windows Explorer, right-click on the file(s), select Properties, then on the General tab, uncheck Read-only. -- Daniel J. Altamura, R.A. I guess you mean the File(s) in the autocad screen and then DWG Properties, did this, but read only was not checked. thanks for the help anyway

Is it just one of your files or any one of your files. The solution will be different depending.

The first response should work if it is only one file. If it is any file, then you may have a problem with the destination folder/drive being read only.

I am not an expert here, but hope this helps.

To add to Jeff's post, if your destination is like a re-writable CD for example you will always have this problem: anything on a CD is automatically set to read only and AutoCAD won't over-write such a file. If you are saving to a server folder, make sure you have write-access to that folder, and most importantly, make sure your network card on your PC did not time-out and lose the connection to the folder too (AutoCAD sees that as write-protection as well). -- Dean Saadallah Add-on products for LT http://www.pendean.com/lt --

No. As I described in my first post, you need to use Windows Explorer, not AutoCAD. That does not work (using Windows Explorer) because the Read only box is not checked, so can't uncheck it. I think this is about AutoCad lock files being screwed up and not about file permissions.

AutoCAD only responds to your OS (local or server) locking files, either because of a log-in rights restriction or an in-use file that is in place, not much else. The read-only box is often not enough to check for a problem like this.

Since you are answering a ten-year-old post, care to share with us what is your setup and where your files are located, your OS, AutoCAD version, and if this is a unique problem to certain files or all files? And is this a new problem?

Or are you really stuck in the year 2005 and reaching forward in time for help?

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't sure if I'd get a reply since this thread is so old. However, it seems that the problem still occurs.

I am using Civil 3D 2013 Infrastructure Design Suite Premium 2013
HP EliteBook 8570w, 16 Gb RAM, 64 bit, i7-3820QM CPU @ 2.70 GHz
Windows 7 Enterprise, 6.1.7601, Service Pack 1 Build 7601

My AutoCAD program files are on a local drive while my drawing and other files (templates, fonts, etc.) are on a network drive with Windows Server OS (not sure what version)).

When I try to delete the dwl and dwl2 files, I get the following message, even though the file is not in use by another program:

This is the first time this has happened to me after using AutoCAD for hundreds of hours. This isn't a critical problem since I can just save the file with a different name, but it is still quite annoying to have to use such a workaround.

Please confirm where locally do you store your files: we all use Win7 and have done for as long as it's been around and AutoCAD 2013-14-15-16 does not lock anyone out here yet.

DWL and DWL2 files are not locking mechanisms, they are there for WHOHAS command inside AutoCAD only. Like I said, your Server or your OS is locking up your files or those folders.

I think you have the drawing open as read only. If not you can do save as to a different location of the existing one

Hello, bro

I am answering the 12 years old post. I solve this problem by Save As menu. I save the file in another distinction and delete the original file and then I move this file to my desired location.

This is sample and easy to solve.

I am very happy to reply your two years last post 🙂

Type save in command line. in the pop-up window. Change the name of your drawing. This works in 2000i. I haven't tried it in a newer release

Try save as under a different name. Then delete original file and rename your saved as file as per original one.

I have the same problem now that I'm working on a new laptop. My software is ACAD 2020 and the files I create on this new laptop all said "write protected". I changed the "open file with" from AutoCAD Application to AutoCAD DWG Launcher and that seems to have fixed the "write protected" issue
