AutoCAD LT 2012 - Move Command Problem

Ok, I am using AutoCAD LT 2012. So I open the move command, select my objects to move, press enter, then select my base point. At this point everything is fine. Then I try to select the point to move the objects to with the following - shift/right-click, select "from" in the shortcut menu, I choose a point to move my objects away from, then I type in a coordinate (@750,0) to move my objects to . . . here is where the objects should move and the command should close . . . BUT instead the command remains active and wants to move the objects from the 2nd point that I selected. Sometimes it works it works, but most of the time it does not. So what is wrong with my AutoCAD?

Based on my reading of your post, AutoCAD is ignoring the first click of your mouse for the "first from" point: but I can't tell, are you actually clicking or defining the "first from" point somehow? You seem to be skipping a selection point.

MOVE works like this, always:

1. Start the command

2. Select Objects

3. CLICK ON SCREEN TO START THE MOVE FROM ACTION, this is referref to as the "first from" point above.

4. For the "destination" point, you can click on screen or type a location: in your specific case, this is where you type/select FROM, the actual object snap, and then move the objects beyond the "first from" point to the destination point.

To the first suggestion: the # instead of @ did not work.

To the 2nd sugestion: I see where you are going with that. I ran through it again and AutoCAD is accepting the "from" point selection but not closing the command/accepting the new location of the objects I am trying to move. Now, I tried moving my objects from a base point to any random point on the screen and even then the command does not close and it wants to move the objects again. I even tried experimenting by using the stretch command (making sure all the objects to move are in the selection window) and even then the problem occurs.

Here is what my command line is saying with each step:

Step #1 (after the move command is activated) - "select objects:"

Step #2 (after selecting objects and clicking enter) - "Specify base point or [Displacement] <Displacement>:"

Step #3 (suppose to be choosing destination point) - "Specify second point or <use first point as Displacement>:"

It seems at times if I press the enter key hard enough that is the only time it works - whichmakes no sense at all !

That would mean you need a new keyboard. no software fix for that.

No, I don't think it is the key board . . . the problem does not occur ONLY when I use the enter button, but anyway you can <enter> . . . doesn't matter if I use the space bar or the right mouse button.

Maybe I should explain the problem differently: I activate the move command, select my objects to move, select a base point to move the objects from, but when I pick a destination point (2nd point I pick) the move command changes the base point to this 2nd point and continues to ask for a destination. The command will do this 3 or even 4 times in a row before it will recognize a destination point and close.

For anyone who replies, pleae don't forget I am using AUtoCAD LT 2012 - any version of LT prior to 2011 will run the move command properly.

Thoughts anyone?

LT2012, Win7 64bit, used the <enter> key, seems to work just fine here all day long. See screenshot of a quick test. You are still describing the process where your first pick is being ignored.

Charlie (if he's around), do you have an issue with this in LT2012?

So... are you using a wireless mouse and/or keyboard?

Have you changed your mouse and keyboard for a test (preferably wired)? never changing anything is no way to test and resolve an issue.

how are you executing the MOVE command? Try typing .MOVE (note the period in the name) instead of picking a button or box.

is the problem limited to one file? All files? Only certain files? New files?

Ok, I am using a wired mouse and keyboard. Yes I am typing Move (always use keyboard short keys as much as possible actually). The problem occurs with random files, some that I have created, others that I have been given and altering to my needs.

Please look at the images attached - the first picture shows that I select the quad of "Grid 3" circle as my base point, then try to select a destination point 750 from a point in line with the quad of "Grid 2" circle. The 2nd picture shows that the base point changes from the quad of "Grid 3" circle to the 2nd point I have chosen - is that what you mean by AutoCAD ignoring the first point I choose? The 3rd picture shows what happens if I hit enter (which uses the 2nd point I chose as a "Displacement point") sending my selected objects very far out from where I want them moved.

This is why I doubt it is a problem with the mouse or keyboard, because the AutoCAD is changing the base point AFTER it has accepted the base point I have chosen.

By pressing ENTER after you select your FROM base point, you are indeed using the coordinates of that point as your displacement. If that's not what you want, you need to enter relative or absolute coordinates instead. (Unless I'm missing something?)

This also sounds like a situation that Object Snap Tracking was designed for–are you familiar with it? In my opinion it's easier to use than FROM.

It might help if you spell out your exact procedure, including all prompts and whether you enter points or select them with the cursor.

And why do you need to use FROM?

FROM is a Command Modifier that takes you outside of the MOVE Command temporarily.

If you use FROM and do not execute it properly the behaviour you are describing does sound correct.

Sorry Kate, but you should see in my picture "Move - Step 2.jpg" that I was using the object snap tracking to select the "from" point. I keep my ortho on as well as the object snap tracking. I then also use the shortcuts like "from" . . . using all these in conjunction with each other keeps everything in my drawings accurately lined up. Sounds like you might do the same thing Kate, except without the additional shortcuts.

Now I've been using this style/system of drafting since AutoCAD 2006 and I've never had this problem with the move command before. I am the only one in my office using 2012 - the others using 2011 do not have the problem I am having. That is why I am convinced there is a glitch in AutoCAD LT 2012 somehow.

I do thank everyone who has thus far provided input, but I am still struggling to find a proper solution to this problem.

Oh I understand that "From" is a command modifier. I am using "from" to select a temporary tracking point to move my objects away from (just like "from" is suppose to be doing). When I am using "from" I am modifying the desination point, it is not suppose to be modifying the base point . . . the base point that is already determined.

Like I've said, I have performed this exact process with previous version of AutoCAD and never had a problem. Also as I've said, I can perform this process with AutoCAD 2012 and it will work, but then I perform the exact same process and it will do what I have explained. So why is this happening randomly? It can't be the mouse because AutoCAD is physically changing the basepoint when I am not asking it to . . . its changing the base point at the time AutoCAD is asking me for a destination point.

I've added explanations to the screenshots I made earlier. Maybe you've always understood the process I am trying to perform from the beginning, but the problem is that it randomly works and randomly fails.

Watch the commands being used at the cursor's pop-up. Share a video back to show your issue in action, turn on cursor-prompts using DYNMODE so we can see what you are typing.

There is no cure for "randomly": you must identify the exact cause at the time it happens. We can only remotely help you fix issues that happen to you all the time and that we can replicate all of the time.

Not answering all the questions asked by everyone, and not willing to test another mouse and keyboard to rule out issues remains a mystery to me.

Did you ever get this problem resolved?

I'm having the same issue... I'll try to explain it more clear - but I understand exactly what you are having an issue with...

When using the MOVE command....

When prompted, I select the objects that I desire to move...

After the selection is finished - I press the enter key

AutoCAD ask for the base point - I select a base point (sometimes using an osnap, sometimes just a random point)

When prompted for the second point - I use an osnap (It happens with them all but I most frequently use - Endp, Midp, Perp, Int) to select the "move to point". Instead of the command using the second point that I've selected as the final move point - it relocates the first "base point" to the location of my "move to" point.

To finally get the command to move to the right location, I can then type "@0,0" and it will snap to the new "second base point" and finish the command.

This is REALLY frustrating and all of the designers in my fortune 500 company are experiencing this same glitch. I've been tasked with finding the solution. Typing @0,0 is a simple work around but not a solution.

Sometimes I've picked the same location over and over again and after 5-10 attempts - it will finally accept the second move point and finish the command.

Also, I replied to a thread on AutoCAD LT 2012, but we are having this issue on AutoCAD 2012 and 2013 (full version) as well as AutoCAD 2013LT...

Same issue using a Logitech G700 or a standard wheel mouse

Post a DWG file with the problem and put notes in there on how to replicate with objects that do this: we are only a dozen users with the same software as you and that ain't happening here.

Sorry, can't post a DWG - extremely confidential information....

However, it happens with just about any number of entities being moved. We are using dynamic blocks for pretty much everything we draw - so that might be part of the issue???

No one is asking you to post an entire DWG file: a snippet or sample DWG where you can replicate the exaxt problem 100% of the time (with notes inside it for others to replicate) is what is needed.

Beats the heck out of the guessing game we are playing now... .

Also, have you turned off Win7's Aero theme yet? Change LT's hardware accelaraton settings yet?

The drawing file where it happens with consistency (not 100% of the time ever) is a 60MB drawing file - couldn't post it just from size restraints. However, it's not a 100% of the time issue either...

Aero theme is turned off from day one and I'm running the full version - other designers are having the same issue running LT...

My workstation is HP Z400 w/ Xeon 6 Core 3.33Ghz, 16 Gig RAM, Nvidia Qudaro 2000.
