Why can i see Modelspace space objects in paper space - beyond viewport boundari

Hi All,

I am having an issue with AutoCAD LT 2016.

I draw my drawing in the modelspace including all text & dims. I then create a viewport on my drawing sheet/paperspace and set the scale of the viewport to the desired scale and zoom in to the area I want shown on the paperspace. Once this is done I revert back to paperspace.

My issue is once I have reverted back to paper space, I can see all of the modelspace Items including those beyond the extents of the viewport (It is like I have stuck a paper sheet behind the model space). This is mulitplied whenever I create mulitple viewports on the paper space, to the point where it becomes very difficult to work with.

This does not happen with all drawings that I work on, I have noticed that a common feature where I do have this issue is when the drawings have PDF XRefs attached, so i would presume that it is something to do with this but I am willing to be advised anyway to correct this.

Attached is a screenshot of my paperspace, which I have zoomed out so that you can see the extent of the modelspace visible. The viewport is the red box

I would appreciate if anyone can advise how to sort out this issue so that the items beyond the viewport boundary are not visible.

Can you tell me if you create a new layout do you get the same issue appearing?

Have you tried to run Audit and -Purge on your drawing? If you attach the drawing to a post I am happy to look at it for you.

Hi @Anonymous,

I was hoping to see an example attached to your post this morning so I could take a look. One thing to look at is if you are clipping your PDFs inside of AutoCAD. If so, remove the clip and see if the problem persists.

Hi John.

I have attached the problematic file, I have also attached the PDF that I am using as an X-Ref.

I tried the audit function and it said there was no errors detected.

I was not sure which option to choose when trying the -PURGE function.

I have clipped the PDF X-ref in the model space and when I remove the clippings then it appears to solve this issue; that being said is there any other way round this.

Hi @Anonymous,

I opened your drawing and I had to adjust the path to the PDF Xref since I am not on your network. In doing so, I don't see the problem you do. I am wondering if changing the path (and even perhaps a detach and attach) might make any difference. So for instance, move the PDF to the same location of your drawing and select No path.

I Have tried changing the path and I have also tried removing the path, but this does not resolve the issue. I have also detached and re-attached but once I have re-clipped the x-ref and repositioned it, I still have the same issue.

Hi @Anonymous,

I have not yet found a workaround for this problem. In the past, I have opened the PDF in a PDF editor and cut it down to size rather than clip in AutoCAD.

I do wonder though if it is the PDF or if it is a graphics card issue. You could try printing the PDF to another PDF to see if that alters the content and then allows clipping properly.

No issue with your file here either in LT2017 and I did not have to repath your PDF for it to appear.

But I did remove the exact path from the dwg file as a test for you to try at your end to see if that may remove the problem. Otherwise if a new layout is not the fix your video card may well be the problem.

Thanks for your help on this. I cropped the PDF in a PDF editor then reattached them to the drawing and it has removed the issue; so going forward I shall have to do this instead of cropping them in AutoCAD.

Thanks Dean, for your help too, I tried to reattached / reload the file you sent back but was not managing to get the PDF back in to the drawing.

I am having the same screen issues on 2016 Mechanical. Imaginary model space objects are appearing randomly outside of paper space viewports until I perform some sort of regen. I can repeatedly make the screen act up by using middle mouse button pan. Pan at the command prompt does not seem to do it. This is happening within the same drawings on multiple workstations.

The drawing originally had multiple xref's. I removed one at a time for trouble shooting purposes to no avail. I also recreated drawing from a template and recreated viewports. None of this seemed to help.

Your description indicates that your system video card cannot keep up with 2016Mech. See if Auto AD has an updated driver for your setup http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/syscert?id=18844534&siteID=123112
OR start GRAPHICSCONFIG command and start turning off all the features on that pop-up starting at the bottom until the issue goes away.

I have tried the Graphicsconfig suggestion and this has solved my issue, without me having to crop the pdf in a pdf editor prior to inserting it as an xref.
