2013 generated the preview so that 2017 didn't have to. I've just tried opening the file in 2013 and saving using that version, but switching to 2017 resulted in more crashes.

I've also tried splitting the files into rough halves to try and narrow down where the issue is. Up to 8 files with 18/19 blocks in each now, and they all cause crashes when trying to generate previews!

Design Centre issue in LT 2017

Strange one, this.

I have a file full of standard drainage details; when trying to pull in blocks from the DWG file through Design Centre, ACAD crashed when trying to generate block previews. I audited the DWG file with all the blocks in it, and there were no errors. I tried watching which preview made ACAD crash, and deleting that block, but no luck. I tried saving the file to another location, under a different file name, and a 2010 & 2007 file version. More crashes.

After another crash, and completely by accident, I opened my old 2013 version of LT. Since it was open, I figured I'd try going through Design Centre to see if the offending file caused this version to crash.

All the previews loaded just fine.

To make it even more bizarre, I can now open the file in 2017 Design Centre, and it whizzes through the previews and lets me insert blocks!

The thing is, not everyone in the office has a machine overdue an upgrade, and the other two users ONLY have LT 2017 on their machines; they can't access the file to drag standard details into their drawings. I have attached the offending dwg. Any ideas?

PIPE PROTECTION HS - 0.6m is the block which seems to be where 2017's ADCENTER command chokes for a long time as it tried to generate the complex preview.

So saving the file in 2013 fixed the problems? Or did 2013 generate the preview in the file for you and eliminated the need for 2017 to do that?

Since you are only using ADCENTER, does it not crash is all of these blocks were individual DWG files instead of clustered all in one file?

BTW your posted DWG file seems to have 1062 purgeable objects: intentional? Purging them out seems to not help either way.

Individual blocks may well work, but we tend to try and group blocks into DWGs by type.

I don't know about the purgeable objects, as the file was produced by a colleague. I suspect not though. I'm in the process of blocking out parts of the dwg and redefining the blocks. No crashes so far, but it's a pretty gruelling process, so I'm still hoping that someone spots a quick and easy fix.
