I would suggest you save that drawing somewhere else to do a test on.

Now delete everything from modelspace which is within the viewport of that layout.

DO

undelete an item and change the layout.

change the layout back.

LOOP UNTIL CRASH.

Now you should be able to find out which item is causing the problem

We have an odd problem occurring, and it is now occurring on multiple machines and growing to multiple files.

Starting sometime last year, we begun having an issue on one DWG file only, where the file would hang/crash when switching back to model space from a particular layout. The file was accessed with multiple machines with various graphics cards, all running AutocadLT2015, and all with the same result. You could use the file with no issue, but when you worked on (in this case the foundation plan) you had to remember to switch to a different layout first before switching to model space. Switching directly from the (foundation plan) would hang/crash CAD at regen.

That particular file has been recovered, audited, copied to a fresh template, etc... all with no effect. We have had no choice but to simply "quarantine" the file and make certain not to go back to it to copy any details/etc. Which worked for a while, but not we have the issue popping up again on another job.

Same scenario. On one DWG only, and when accessing one particular layout (in this case the wall section sheet) cad will hang/crash. This leads me to believe the issues is entity based not setting based but I cant figure out what could possible be causing it. Thoughts?

Welcome to the Forums

Have you tried deleting the affected layout and then seeing if it happens with another layout?

If it doesn't I suggest you delete the affected layout and then make a new layout and recreate the layout.

Thank you for the reply. We had thought of that, and it will likely be done as a quick fix temporarily. But it doesnt address the issue of "why" and "how". I just checked back in with the draftsmen, and over the course of his morning it is now atleast 2 of the layouts exhibiting the issue. There is some entity or commonality between the layouts that must be causing it. Luckily the current file/job is small with minimal sheets. But i would really like to take this opportunity to discover the real cause, so it can be stopped/fixed before or when it happens to occur on a large published set with more significant complications to replacing a sheet from scratch.

Many ways to fix a file, here is a list https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/AutoCAD-File-Corruption.html

They are all painful, but you have to decide if it's just quicker to delete a corrupt layout and move on with a new one. Time is Money after all.

I will be running them from a copy of the offending file to try and identify the culprit and solution. I let you know what i find. and thanks!
