Bug: commands get entered twice

Hi all, i've had this bug since i installed autocad several months ago and wanted to know if anyone else has experienced it because it's pretty annoying.

Often (but not all the time) when i enter a command, it seems to run twice.

--For example, when i type BE (block editor), it comes up with a dialogue box, I double click the block i want to edit and then... rather than opening the block, it reopens the dialogue box as if i had exited and run the command again. So, i double click the block i want to edit and ... it works fine. always works fine the second time.

--When i type REN (rename blocks) it works fine, but after i've finished, it reopens the dialogue box again as if i had retyped the command.

--i noticed some strange behavior with the fillet command the other day, as if it was getting extra spacebar presses and exiting out of the command before i could do anything

other commands, like line, copy, move, circle etc. work fine.

has anyone out there come across this before?

Perhaps try swapping out your mouse and keyboard in case there are some sticky keys or buttons.

Also instead of typing the shortcut BE what happens when you enter the full command BEDIT ?

Likewise with REN which I think represents RENAME but that's not just for Blocks though..

I sometimes experiment the same phenomen with the space bar but not the Enter key, for all commands. Quitting and starting acad again is the only way to fix that.

On Acad 2017...

As mentioned already, try swapping to a different keyboard and mouse to rule out hardware issues. (I have a bad mouse on my office computer, it often thinks I am double-clicking when I am only clicking once. Annoying, but I like that mouse so I'm just tolerating it.) Also, if you've recently installed this version, you might want to check for any software updates.

The computer mouse is most likely the issue. Many have cheap micro switches with low life expectancy for the left and right buttons - the mouse (switches) may also be outside the specifications of the voltage and amps for newer computers - so the useful life is made shorter still. Are you experiencing the same problem with the right button? (it gets less use so it should last longer) if not, you can try replacing the both switches with higher quality switches (if you like DIY projects) or purchase a new mouse.

That's a version that is 8+years old now: it's not a bug, perhaps your 8+year old mouse and keyboard need to change too?

It is a bug. My devices are not involved because starting again makes it all right. I already changed both of them, by the way.

Yes, although i am an expert, one of my computer is very old and I use my old perpetual license

If it is a bug in AutoCAD2017, and not the mouse/keyboard issue or add-in or add-on triggered, then sadly there is nothing anyone can do about it and Autodesk is not going to do much about it either (they no longer considered current to warrant attention).

How would you like to proceed?

Thanks Paul (and everyone else who's commented).

So a few things:

--The next time I ran autocad, the bug did not occur and i could not replicate the fault. It seems that it starts happening some time after I've been using autocad for a while. After running Autocad for an hour this morning, the problem occurred. I, restarted autocad and the bug is currently not occurring.

--i'm running autocad LT 2024

--my computer (HP Omen), Keyboard (Razer) & mouse (Logitech MX Master 3s) are all less than a year old and high quality. Nonetheless, to eliminate the possibility of mouse / keyboard, I disconnected them all incl. my docking station, and just using the laptop itself, the problem persisted.

--as for hardware, i wouldn't be surprised if its my silly laptop which, though high spec, fancy and expensive is sometimes unreliable and strangely slow for seemingly mundane tasks. I don't think i'd try a gaming laptop for engineering again...

--I tried full names of instructions e.g. RENAME but still had the bug

I only use the spacebar, but next time the bug starts occurring, i'll try using the enter key to see if there's any difference.

In the meantime, i took your advice and restarted autocad (LT 2024) and the problem has gone away

Do you have the latest 2024 LT updates installed?

And what is your Windows OS?

we don't know which commands/workflow forces it, why it isn't fixed or at least what the background is.

Depending on the workflow and certainly also depending on the hardware/system, some type of memory fills up too much and problems arise.
A restart will free up the memory again.

I would like work on it, but for this I need a reproducable (short as possible) workflow to run into this issue and because of it isn't the same for everyone and the most of users never runs in it,

it is not important for Adesk to explain anything (or to publish workarounds without a restart).

I don't know background informations, just some key facts and hundred posts of users who runned into.

I had this this few dayes/weeks often, but it gone, so I can't test anymore.

Never seen it in any year version in our offices, so it must have a trigger that is unique to something. @cadffm says they have but not in a while.

Do you use the spacebar for enter? Or the moue right-click for enter? Or...?

For the former, there is the old tip from much older versions of docking your commandline to stop that from occurring. But I use this all the time with an undocked commandline with no issues.

For the latter, show us what your right-click settings in OPTIONS command are when you get a chance.

First, confirm you are running this version of LT2024 using ABOUT command

How interesting... I've tested it several times now and it only occurs with the spacebar. the enter button and the right mouse button always work correctly.

It did not matter which file in autocad I was in (i had 3 open)

Once again, after restarting autocad the problem went away.

So, now we and you knowing that you run into this familiar issue, what we (users) can not explain or fix.

Waiting for someone who knows more about and Autodesks fix in the AutoCAD core or published workaround.

Did you test the old workaround (working for some Versions) where pendean pointed to?

Dock your commandline [CTRL+9](a docked commandline will reach from the left to the right program window)

Unfortunately i only just understood what you were saying about a possible command line dock issue. I will now have to wait for the problem to occur again so that i can test this.

It seems to occur when your command line is not docked. I thought Autodesk had corrected this issue, but it started happening to me again with the last update of 2025. I'm running AutoCAD 2025.1.2 product version V.162.0.0 on Windows 11 Enterprise 24H2 OS build 26100.3476. If you dock your command line it goes away. If you shut down and restart AutoCAD it fixes itself for a time. once you do a specific something, the space bar will act like you're hitting it twice. I have yet to figure out what the specific thing is that triggers this behavior.

It's very annoying as I've become accustomed to having my command link floating and shorter. I like having it floating as i don't have to hit F2 to see the result of some commands like LIST and some others.

@OBERDACKER Open a support ticket with Autodesk: most in our office have floating commandlines, running 2025.1.2 in Win11Pro, no such issues exist for any of us (mix of desktops and laptops).

I had this problem (the space bar acts like you're hitting it twice) in the past, many years ago, and now it occurs again this week a few times.
I have not changed anything for years in the setup.
So it seems to occur 'out of the blue'.
Indeed it only occurs with a floating command line.
As soon as I dock the command line, problem is solved. (Acad-restart works as well)

That's old AutoCAD2022 (aka not new, so something did in fact change, was it the undocking? and restarting the program is also a fix?), and sadly 24.1s means nothing about whether you are fully updated of not: ABOUT command inside your software should list AutoCAD 2022.1.6 Update as the version. Does it by chance?

Or are you on a MAC? Then your ABOUT command should reflect 2022.4.1 Hotfix as being installed.
