With the latest update they have changed the trim and extend commands. I typically like to select trim and then hit "enter" "enter" which allows me to trim as much as I want over and over again. It used to allow me to draw those trim commands as rectangles and now it is a squiggly line that is much harder to control. Is there a setting that would allow me to go back to the way it was?

Thank you,

Which version have you updated from? The squiggly line selection has been around for quite some time, instead of holding your left mouse button down when you try to do a window selection you should start the window with a mouse click then release the button and only click again when you want to pick the opposite corner.

I cannot screen shot as if I let go of the mouse the command exits. It's basically making me use something similar to the lasso command to trim and extend. I will be going back to 2020 if I do not resolve this. No biggie either way I guess.

It is a good idea to learn FIRST about changed and new things, then use the new Version.

The updated commands trim&extend are the best sample.

You can watch videos about the new thing, it explains how it works now

and how you can change it.

Wait some hours/days, so you can take a look in to the [F1]Help.

My German version is available, the english version not. Check it out tomorrow again.

http://help.autodesk.com/view/ACD/2021/ENU/

For you:

Variable: TRIMEXTENDMODE

1 is default and the new style

0 is the old style.

My advice: Learn first the new thing, then disable it if you like.

Note, the variable is stored in your draft file! (sounds stupif for me, but we can not change it)

0 - Standard operation

1 - Quick action

GoogleTrans

This system variable controls the default mode when using the commands TRIM and EXTEND. In the standard mode, you first enter all cut or stretch boundaries. The quick mode has the following effects:

All objects in the drawing automatically serve as TRIM or stretch boundaries.
By default, objects to be trimmed or stretched can be selected with a two-point fence, a push-pull lasso, or individually.

Note: The optimized process corresponds to the TRIM and EXTEND processes in AutoCAD Web & Mobile.

Aahhhh, yes indeed apparently this is one of the new updated features, looks like you no longer need to select objects to trim too first, and your squiggly line is a fence rather than window by default. When you start the trim command if at the first prompt you just type the letter 'o' for 'mOde' then you can select 'standard' which is the old behaviour 'quick' is the new updated feature. But I like the fact that it now doesn't need you to preselect objects to trim too it automatically starts trimming objects to the next closest object it detects.

I hate the way the quick (Trim / Extend) feature works but it's easy to turn off.

The issue I have is using complicated surveys & site layouts with literally thousands of lines & you want to extend a line accross it all??? Really sucks.

To change from quick mode.

1. select Trim or Extend.

2. from the commandline select 'mOde'

3. select 'Standard'

4. to change back, repeat steps 1 &2.

5. then select 'Quick'

Thanks .... simple solution.

I suppose there may be some merits to the change, but once one becomes accustomed to drafting a certain way, it is annoying to change. Perhaps when I have a few hours spare, I will give quick menu and some of the other new features a chance ..... but for now ....

"But I like the fact that it now doesn't need you to preselect objects to trim too it automatically starts trimming objects to the next closest object it detects."
It does that in the 'standard' mode when you hit return twice anyway. So the new 'quick' mode is actually way more clunky for switching between whether you want to select a trim object or just trim at will.
