A quick Google search does show a few places where linetype generation does cause this problem (due to available computer RAM) AutoCAD does have to work out all the dashes for each polyline individually as you change zoom. So increasing computer RAM may help. However, I would imagine you only really need the dashed lines for when it comes to plotting your drawings? You cannot turn on linetype generation just for plotting or just in a layout, but what you can do is use the layer properties manager whilst in an active viewport and that does allow you to specify a different linetype just for use in an individual viewport. So if you turn on linetype generation for all the polylines, but use a separate layer for them, then in modelspace set the polylines to ByLayer for the linetype, and set the linetype to Continuous for that layer (in modelspace) then in your layout make the viewport active and in the layer manager change the 'VP Linetype' for that layer to your dashed linetype then your plots will be visually correct, but in modelspace, the polylines will appear as continuous and should work quicker. (untested)

Hi,

I am working with a file for a landscape project. The file is pretty large, but nothing compared to other files we work with.

In the file, there are contour lines, which are quite complex. I have them as dashed polylines and to make them look good, I have turned on 'line-type generation'.

After turning on 'line-type generation' the file has become very slow. Not all the time, but sometimes when I zoom in or out Autocad LT regenerates all the lines leaving me hanging for 20-40 seconds.

Does anyone have a solution ? Turning of 'line-type generation' is not an option.

Best, Jens, Denmark
