Using Autocad LT 2021, in order to bind an xref to the current drawing, I see the help file instructions tell us to open the External References palette, select the reference name you want to bind, right-click, and then click Bind. I do that. Except after right clicking, the dialog box that appears does not have the Bind choice as one of the options. What am I missing?

Usually when I bind an xref, I select the xref and select bind. The options I get are bind or insert. I have always used in insert option.

Hi,

You cannot bind the PDF as we bind the drawing. Instead you could import the pdf as objects. To do that click on the xrefed PDF and you would see an option to import PDF as an object in the ribbon as seen in the snapshot below. Now click on that and press enter, and then you would be prompted whether you want to keep the xref, detach or unload. Select unload since we no longer need the xrefed PDF.

Why do you need to bind it? Are you sending the drawing out to someone? If so why not use etransmit, it creates a zip file which contains all items needed to open the drawing.

Just tell whoever to put all the files in the same directory.

Data integrity is a vital part of the surveying industry and minimising risk of losing content is highly important. You cannot rely on the receiving party to follow such instructions or continue to pass the drawing on fully intact. This is why the ability to maintain a drawing file without any xrefs is critical. When complying with Government contracts this is also a factor and often required particularly because archiving processes in Government agencies may file name or metadata information contrary to the correct operating requirements of the drawing.

Relying on humans to do the right thing is not reliable...
