MULTIPLE FEILD AREAS

Hello all,

I'm just wondering if there is a simple way to take text associated with a polyline (field: object, polyline, area) and add them together. My hope is to take the closed polyline outlining each of my four floorplates and add the field text for each floor together, giving me the total Gross Floor Area (GFA) for my building, thus negating the chance of a clerical error. I know that This is all possible with Excel, but I thought that on a smaller scale, it would be nice not to have to go that route.

Fingers cross that makes sense.

Use FIELD command

Field category: select Objects

Field names: select Formula

Under Formula: in the edit box right mouse click and select Insert Field on the cursor menu

Another Field window appears on top of the previous and this time next to Object type: click the cross-hair symbol to select object: Select the first row of the Field object that you want to add which probably is an MTEXT object.

Then under Property select Contents and click OK.

Back in the 1st Field window under Formula type a + then repeat the steps for the next rows:

When you're done click the Evaluate button and you'll see the total sum value under Preview:

Click OK button to place your FIELD containing the sum value.

Note following Additional Format limitations:

1. Your FIELD areas to add cannot have any other text like Suffix such as SM so only the area value itself.

2. Your FIELD areas cannot use Number separation symbols for Thousands like a Comma so must be left at (None)

Thank you so much... super easy to follow and worked perfectly. The only follow-up question I would ask, if I may, is whether it is possible to navigate the same process with multiple fields in a single text block??

If you have a MTEXT object which contains multiple FIELDs linked to PLINE areas, I don't see a Property available on the list to just get the CONTENTS of that single FIELD but instead it extracts the CONTENTS of the entire MTEXT string.
