I apologize for asking what appears to read as a silly question...

I recently downloaded AutoCAD 2022 LT. In the past, I downloaded the new version, created a template and uninstalled the old version from my desktop - this is from memory; perhaps I forgot as critical step.

I deleted the 2020 LT version and all of my AutoCAD DWG files disappeared. This actually makes sense to me, but I do not recall that this happened during my last upgrade. I reinstalled 2020, all files reappeared, and I began opening each file with the 2022 LT version...this works, but feels time consuming...

Thank you for your patience!

It's always a good idea to back things up before you do any sort of (Un)Install. That being said, what you describe does not make sense. Unless you stored them in one of AutoCAD's system folders the files should still be there after you take it off. They would not just magically re-appear when you install the new version...

With all that being said, I don't see why you think you need to do a conversion. The DWG format has not changed since 2018. 2022 still uses the 2018 format.

Thank you JoshRYTZZ,

...I typically keep up with the new versions...I let two years pass this time.

I agree, this does not make sense; When I open my template, I save as - customer name - and select the client folder in Documents. Open documents to access all client files. As an aside, all pdfs remained in documents while the DWG files disappeared.

Perhaps I should uninstall 2022, and try to reinstall...

You said you "Deleted" 2020, not uninstalled. Is this an accurate statement, or did you properly Uninstall?

What you are describing sounds like a "Delete My Files" option like you would have with a customizable peripheral - like a SpaceMouse - but I don't think AutoCAD offers such an option...

So you lost track of where you stored your custom files: sounds like you do it old school style by burying them under the program window, and when you upgraded that location is not the default so you thought they were lost.

Ask your IT person or someone you have that is savvy about searching for files on your PC: they are all still there, you just lost track of where.

Thank you for your help. So far, the program is working as expected.

I'll ask my IT professional about this when we catch up. The Dell Support Assist, run every week, checks for driver updates, scans hardware, cleans files and tunes the performance. Also use an independent Intel SSD tool kit as double check...so far nothing reported. What ever happened seems to be an isolated event; I installed and uninstalled 2020 two additional times with the expected results...as in the past.

This fairly powerful computer is in its 6th year of life and although it does utilize all approved AutoCAD hardware, perhaps it's time to consider a new desk top.

Thank you again,

Michael

Dell workstations are good systems. I've had several. But yeah, 6 years is about the limit. We were on a 4-5 year rotation at my last job. Much beyond that and you could tell it was time.
