Is there anyway to get around not being able to wblock a drawing file that has proxy objects in it. I get files from a consultant with +1000 layers and less than 25% are actually used. I try to purge and it only gets rid of some. In the past I was able to just wblock the file and it would only keep the layers used in the file, but now there is some kind of proxy object that doesn't allow wblock or copy clip. How do you identify proxy objects in a drawing?

Thanks,

Hi,

just an answer to your "second question".

Visible drawing objects are never the problem, the problem is invisible data/information about this 3.party (missing) applikation!

Try to INSERT this file to another as block

or as Xref and bind it.

..

If you can have the right 'object enabler' (set proxynotice to 1 and ooen the file, so you can read more about the missing programs, or ask your sender).

Install DWG trueview, install object enabler, open TrueView,

start DWG Convert from Trueview and convert the file to DWG without AEC data (or anything like this)

Try it, perhaps it works.

Why not just XREF those files and freeze those layers? It is the ideal solution for most users.

OR you can do...
1) Ask the file creator to "save as AutoCAD", aka dumb down the files for you, and resend.
2) or do #1 above yourself that sometimes works: if you have a modern variant of AutoCAD/LT, explore DWGCONVERT command (and/or PURGEAECDATA command in the 2022 versions).
3) If available, install the required Object Enabler for that foreign file: not always available from Autodesk (see link from other replies) or 3rd party CAD software is usually the biggest problem.

HTH
