Is C3D2020 fully patched and updated?
Is the problem in this one file?
This one layout?
Or in all files? Even in in a blank new file?

This may be a flaw in C3D2020 where you opted not to post, never seen or heard of the issue here in plain AutoCAD (running 2020.1.3 here).

Sorry.

Layout objects lock after adding/modifying objects

Hello,

First off let me say that I am using Civil3D 2020 and I am using Sheetset Manager (SSM). My problem relates to working with layouts so I posted here instead of the C3D forum. The issue I am experiencing is best described with an example. I have created a new sheet in SSM. I open the layout and I add a viewport from another drawing via the "Model Views" tab in SSM. I then add a second view to the layout. Upon adding the second view, the data in the first view disappears. So I decide to delete the first viewpoint and simply add it back. Except I cannot delete the first viewport or modify anything on the layout. I can select objects but cannot change or delete them. This locking behavior is what I'm primarily trying to solve. The disappearing data in the viewport is a separate problem. (Which i suppose I should make a separate post unless the two are related) I have experienced this behavior when adding anything to the layout. For instance, add a north arrow linked to the viewport, everything is locked. Execute the clip viewport function, everything is locked. In most cases I am allowed one action and then the layout is locked. I can however close the drawing containing the layout and reopen and then I can continue to work however if I executed one of the examples mentioned above the layout would be locked again.

As additional info that might be relevant, my workflow involves having all linetypes, lineweights, colors, etc governed by the modelspace drawing rather than the layout. In an attempt to have that functionality I have set the following acad variables:

VISRETAIN = 0

XREFOVERRIDE = 0

VPLAYEROVERRIDESMODE = 0

I have found many examples of behavior that is similar in the forum but none solved my problem.

If this is a duplicate post I apologize. I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks for the reply. My value is set to 64 which is the default value. Interestingly though, if I close the drawing and reopen, I can then delete the first viewport. After that I can add the first viewport back in after which I have both viewports and they display correctly. Alternatively, I can start with a clean layout, add one viewport, save & close, reopen and add second viewport. This also works correctly. Adding one after the other in the same session does not.

Any chance you can share a DWG file with this problem?

Forgive me, but I fail to see a connection with SSM too: does the problem or you only exist when you use SSM, and never anywhere else? Most of us use SSM (not C3D) and we're not seeing that behavior either.

TIA

@pendean

I have included the acad.dwt which is what the drawings containing my named views were created from. I also included the sheetset template that I used in SSM. The titleblock has been removed. The only reason I mentioned SSM is because it is the act of dragging the model space views from SSM to the layout that seems to cause the problem... That said I can using a stand alone dwg and create viewports with the viewport command without any issue. This does not seem to be a good comparison since executing the viewport command only creates a viewport of the local model space. SSM on the other hand is creating xrefs in the current drawing and then making the viewport. Furthermore, you may well be creating viewports from multiple drawings which in my case I am. So there is more going on when using SSM.

"Most of us use SSM (not C3D) and we're not seeing that behavior either."

This is why I posted to the Autocad forum because SSM is part of the base acad program. I don't know why civil 3d would have any impact since it doesn't add any additional functionality. Furthermore I did access my SSM today from vanilla AutoCAD with the same results.

While writing this reply I considered the fact that I am adding views from multiple source drawings. I just tested and if I add viewports from one source neither of the problems I encountered exist. It is the act of adding viewports from multiple drawings that causes the issue. In my case I have a plan view drawing, profile drawing and legend drawing. Again I don't know how to manually create a layout without SSM that has mulple drawings sources and multple viewports zoomed perfectly to named views. So I can't answer your question as to whether this happens without SSM. Thanks again for your help.
