PEDIT - FIT Command

Can anyone give an example of when they used the PEDIT - Fit command? I cant think of an application for that, though I know it must be useful somewhere.

My assumption is that the Fit option was created in a very early implementation of AutoCAD when the programmers were not familiar with the math of B-splines and NURBS. Fit was a lame attempt at passing a curve through a series of points.
