There is no problem, it appears you do not know of the another selection method called FENCE which you are invoking, read about it here, there is nothing broken https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2016/ENU/AutoCAD-Core/files/GUID-0510F4AF-B6C7-455C-899F-0AB126EC8154-htm.html

Sadly your "problem" screenshot does not show all the steps you invoked to get to FENCE, and your "no problem" screenshot shows nothing at the commandline so its hard to tell if you even started TRIM command or are just windowing without having a command running.

Okay, so when I'm in the command for Trim or Extend, I chose a starting point and drag the cursor to select my objects. The issue I'm having is that when I do that a single dashed line is shown and is the edge for the trim or extend. In the past, a highlighted box appears, either green highlight with dashed edges or a blue highlight with solid edges. I tried looking up this issue in other forums but I couldn't find a solution to my problem. I have attached some pictures of my problem. Please help, this is annoying. Thanks in advance.

@jmsigala,

Which version of AutoCAD?

Does this happen in just one drawing or is it reproducible in other drawings?

Graphics driver up to date?

Can you reproduce the problem if you open the drawing on another computer?

My first thought was that it was a 3D drawing and you are looking at the window selection box from "on edge".

Set UCS to World and then use the PLAN command. How does TRIM/EXTEND behave now?

A sample drawing would be helpful. Could you share a sample drawing that exhibits the problem?

Regards,

Jerry

Hello Jerry,

The version I am running is 2020. All drivers are up to date. I did a reboot of my computer where everything was uninstalled and reinstalled back in mid November of 2020. AutoCAD was installed in the same month as the reboot. It was working perfectly and as it should until this morning. The computer with the problem is my home computer. I came to work just now and the version I have at work is 2019. It has never had the problem I am having with my home computer. I will try your suggestions when I return home later today.

Thank you for the reply.

Kent,

My order of commands is below.

Trim->*Enter->*Enter

Extend->*Enter->*Enter

The single dashed line will show as it does in the "problem" image whether I hit enter once or twice. However, if I am not in a command and I try to highlight objects, the green highlighted box and the blue highlighted box will appear as it should.

Any thoughts?

I believe that is a function of the Quick mode that was added in the 2020 version. In the Quick mode, it jumps straight to selecting the objects you want to trim. This seems to default to fence. I am not sure if there is a way to change this. You can go back to Standard mode, where you first select the cutting edges. This method still uses the window and crossing. Start the Trim command, then at the command line click mOde, then Standard. I hope that helps!
