topic Unable to use crossing Window Selection even with Point Cloud locked in AutoCAD Forum

I am currently tracing a XREF RCP attached Point Cloud in AutoCAD. But I find that when working on the file, I cannot use the crossing window to select linework in the point cloud with out accidently selecting the Point cloud itself and the boundary appearing.

It is extremely frustrating, I have locked the RCP Cloud layer and the locked the Point cloud aswell, but nothing makes the point unselectable, which would allow a crossing window to be used effectively while still seeing the cloud.

Anyone have a solution or workflow? I am currently flipping the Cloud on and off using point cloud manager when using crossing window but this is time consuming.

Thanks!

There have been several threads about wanting things on locked Layers to not be selectable, which you can Search for. But there are situations where one would want to be able to select them, such as to use as Trim or Extend boundaries, so it's not likely to change, unless they decide to make it an option.

The workaround is to [temporarily!] put the Point Cloud on the DEFPOINTS Layer, and turn off or freeze Layer "0", because with "0" off/frozen, things on the DEFPOINTS Layer can't be selected. But they also can't be Object-snapped to, so if that's part of what you need, that workaround is not a solution.

@Kent1Cooper thanks for your prompt reply to this question. I attempted this just now, but this did not stop the XREF point cloud being selected, I also tried it with a AutoCAD XREF and actual Polylines in AutoCAD 2021. Just to confirm I placed the object on "defpoints" and froze/turned off layer "0", everything was selectable as normal with crossing window.

Im not too concerened about not being able to select the Point cloud, but I have traced something using a pline and then attempt to select that element, the point cloud get selected immediately, unless I zoom right in and select the object.
