I have just started to learn Autocad 3D. Earlier I´ve been working in Solid works, Catia V4/5 and a little in Inventor. I have two questions/problem:

When Im trying to create a solid from a profile made with lines with the Extrude-comand I only get surfaces, not a solid (See picture.) (It works when I use a circle though.)

Is it possible to create a sketchplane and switch to 2D to make a sketch? (Like in SW, CV4/5 and Inv.)

If you get only surfaces, this means you are not extruding an closed polyline profile but just lines.

Make sure your profile is a closed polyline to extrude to a solid.

Edit:

When you use Dynamic UCS you can 'hoover' over a face so that this face becomes your new 'sketchplane' and create a new solid or Polyline on that face.

OK. Thanks. But how can I check if the profile is closed?

Based solely on your previous software experiences, is there any reason you are not using AutoCADMECHANICAL instead of old tired plain AutoCAD? If you all currently subscribe to plain AutoCAD then the MECH is a free download to use as well https://www.autodesk.com/products/autocad/included-toolsets/autocad-mechanical

Or did you change your line of work/industry?

HTH

As @Patchy stated, look for it in the Properties.

Do not change the property from Open to Closed for it will create another vertex between your last and first point which can cause problems.

If possible always start with Polyline and use the CLOSE function to create the last linepart. When you have only lines, use PEDIT to change to polyline and JOIN to make it a closed polyline.

I agree about Autocad 3D. It reminds me of Catia V4 😞 Unfortunately we dont have any other 3D-CAD-program, at the company I currently work at. I will not use the program that much. Just wanted to learn a little about it. I was working as design engineer for 10 years, but since 8 years I work as chemical process engineer.

Im gonna check up about AutoCADMECHANICAL, and talk to my colleagues. Thanks for the tip!

AutoCAD does have a press-pull feature similar to what ummm Etchup-skay has 😉
