topic Why do white lines in model space change to reddish? in AutoCAD Forum

I typically in model space work on layer 0, and the layer default color is white. My workspace color is black. If I am working on a drawing with a lot of lines, 3d objects and hatches, sometimes after command (usually inserting a flat shot) all of the white lines, including those in 3d objects, will change to a dull red color (similar to color 13). Any other color, red blue, 220, etc., stays their original color. Clicking properties on a changed line shows it's color as still "by layer". In paper space viewports, these same lines appear as their correct color (switch to black on a white background), and they print correctly. Refresh does not correct it, purging does not help, but if I go to paper space and back to model space, it corrects itself and the lines are once again white.

This has occurred in every version of Autcad I have ever used, from R13 up to and including R21, which I am currently using. It has occurred on every computer I have ever used, so don't tell me its a graphic card problem, my work computers have the most robust cards available.

This seems to be a glitch within Autocad itself, and I am wondering if anyone else has the same problem, or found a solution to prevent it. It's more annoying than anything else because the drawing becomes hard to read. I'd attach a pic but I can't MAKE it happen to take a screenshot.

I think it's a graphic problem.

Do a screencast. If it's not a graphics problem, others will be able to see it in the video.

So, I see you waited until the end to reveal it is a random occurrence. If so, it is most likely not an AutoCAD problem. Without an example, it will be extremely hard to figure out what the problem might be.

Hi,

>> but I can't MAKE it happen to take a screenshot.

Does that mean that when you take a screenshot then the lines show up in the color they are expected to be?
In that case you have a graphic card (memory) or -driver problem.

In case of troubles like this I would start disabling the hardware acceleration (command _GRAPHICSCONFIG) and see if that helps.

We have had that issue on all of our computers here at work. some have newer computers than others but all have this problem sometimes. Even the new AutoCAD 2024 has this issue sometimes. The only way we found to fix it is to toggle to paperspace then back to model space and it seems to turn everything white again like it's supposed to be. Can't find a cause for it.

You are describing a video card/driver shortcoming, not much else: REGENALL should do about the same as you toggling back and forth like that. Also ensure everyone's AutoCAD is updated (2022.1.3 / 2023.1.5 / 2024.1.2) to name recent variants)..

If that did not help... Set GFXDX12 variable to 0 (that's a zero) then restart AutoCAD 2022-2023-2024: reverting to DirectX11 fixes similar problems for similar users.

If still no relief then start GRAPHICSCONFIG command and change the 2D Display Settings pulldown from "advanced mode" to one of the other choices.

If all else fails, then turn off Hardware Acceleration as a last resort, and start a support ticket through your subscription portal as explained here
https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-find-my-support-cases-with-Autodesk-Technical-Support.html?_ga=2.143218544.457179972.1687356981-993279110.1686949184

I'm not arguing. It's already been stated in this thread several times that it is a graphics problem. If it were AutoCAD, it would not be random. Try messing with your graphics settings and/or make sure your driver is updated.

Just for the record, I have been using AutoCAD for 40 years, and this has never happened to me, on any computer, in any version of AutoCAD, or in any file. I don't know what that says [if anything] about whether it is more likely to be an AutoCAD problem, a graphics card problem, or something else. [Might it be an overlay-program problem? My usage has been only "vanilla" AutoCAD and sometimes Architectural Desktop -- are you using one of the Civil or Mechanical/Electrical or Plant or other overlays?] But if it's file-specific, presumably I should see it happen in one of those files, so please share one [or a few].

Good catch! confirm

I could reproduce it, but with a very old AutoCAD version i am sitting in front of today.

We will bring this to the beta test team for new releases.

I think I know what it is. For some who knows that fact:

AutoCAD changes displaying colors, depending on there own color + the color of the background!

Let's name it "bckg_correctioncolor4displaylist"

In one or more cases, AutoCAD use the wrong "bckg_correctioncolor4displaylist" to display objects,

until you force the update.

Workaround1:

Disable the cache of model/layouts -> LAYOUTREGENCTL

Workaround2:

Use the same backgroundcolor in model&layouts

I could not get that procedure to duplicate. Mine just happens at random. I could be working in a drawing and I could switch to work in another window or program and when I look back at my autocad, all the white has changed colors. It usually happens more when I have multiple drawings open at the same time. Seems to me that maybe it's a cache problem. But I'm not a programmer, so I can't really say. I've tried all the fixes that I have seen online and nothing has fixed it so far. Even having both paper space and model space backgrounds both black, it still happens. Sounds like cadffm might be onto something and can implement a fix for this as it is super annoying.

Can confirm I have the same issue with white turning pinky red in 3D.

Switching to paper space and back to model does seem to resolve it so thanks for that hack!
