topic GeomarkPosition Question in AutoCAD Forum

Hello Autodesk team,

I have a quick question about the GeomarkPosition command. I have about 4,000 coordinate points (Lat and Long) and was wondering if there is a fast solution to placing all these points onto a geolocated map. Rather than copying and pasting each individual latitude and longitude into the command line when prompted is there a way to speed up this process via a different command?

Thank you

Where do you have these coordinates stored exactly? What file format?
Are you stuck with plain AutoCAD or are you using Map3D or Civil3D?

The coordinates are located on an excel spread sheet, and yes I am limited to only AutoCAD.

Hi Julian,
Welcome to the Autodesk Forums.
To bring them into Civil 3D you'll need to create a Lat&Long Point File Format. Please post your Point File and I can "point" you in the right direction.
Dave

Hi Dave, please find the point source attached in an excel format. I've simplified the information to only include tag, latitude and longitude.

Best,

Julian,
1. Save XLS file to CSV in Excel. Remove the Header first.
2. Use MAPCSASSIGN to assign Arizona Central Coordinate System. (AZ83-CIF)
3. In Civil 3D Home Tab >> Create Ground Data Panel >> Points Dropdown >> Point Creation Tools select Import Points. In the Import Points dialogue box select your CSV Point File and then click Manage Format. Choose PNE (Comma delimited) and click "Copy" to modify the PNE Point File Format. Re-name to PLatLong. Click the "Northing" Heading and change to "DECDEG Latitude". Click the "Easting" Heading and change to "DECDEG Longitude". Click Load..., then Parse, to test the new Point File Format. Click OK. Back in the Import Points dialogue box click "Do coordinate transformation if possible". Click OK. You've now got points.

A lot of steps. If you get stuck, let me know and I'll give you some screen shots.
Dave

Hi Dave, would it be possible to get some step by step screen shots? Totally new to Civil 3D and cannot get passed inserting the points, I get an error message saying no point file format match found.

Thanks,

Julian,
First check your Point File. After saving, in Excel, as a CSV it should look like this:
Tag #,lat,long,
1000,33.74056453,-111.78511,
1001,33.73954592,-111.7853256,
1002,33.73958829,-111.7853083,
1003,33.73966021,-111.7852696,
1004,33.73961042,-111.7852648,
Delete the header. (Tag #,lat,long,)
I've attached the CSV of Points.
Here's a more straightforward way to create the Point File Format. In the Settings Tab >> Point File Formats, right-click "PNE (comma delimited)" and select "Copy". In the Point File Format Dialogue Window that comes up, make these changes and use "Load" and "Parse" to check things.
