autocad file glitching out with huge hatch I can't delete

Hello everyone,

I am working on this autocad file and for some reason it has become really slow.

When I open the file for the first time, I can see a huge hatch appear and a huge white circle in the centre of it.

I can't seem to delete it, so I'm not sure what to do next to speed up the file.

Please could someone take a look for me?

File opens fine here, missing the image of course. Are you sure the giant thing you "can't delete" isn't this image reference?

Is the file not crazy slow? the picture attached to this post shows the problem I'm encountering with the file.

No, it opened just fine. It's a little slow to pan so I used QSELECT to delete the 173 hatch objects and it's as smooth as silk now. If you must use all that hatching, perhaps you can WBlock it out and Xref it back in just before printing?

It's not slow without the unreferenced file. To clarify what @rkmcswain asked, we get this on opening the drawing:

That missing file must be where your problem is, because we don't get the Hatch pattern. Is it an Xref, or a linked image file of some kind? What have you tried to delete it?

EDIT: I had it open the External References palette, and the missing file is called "myscan," so I can only assume that is where the problem imagery is -- not an AutoCAD Hatch pattern per se, but part of a scanned image.
