Mechanical engineer

Hello, I don't know if this question was answered before but after a quick search on the forum, I could not find anything related to my problem.

I am missing filles that I made with autocad. the issue started a few months ago and I tried anything that i could think about.

It started on an old autocad installation , cant remeber well the version of it that i was running on the same machine with windows 10 as operating system. ( specs at that time : win 10 professional , dell precision T1650 Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1220, V2 @ 3.10GHz 3.10 GHz, Graphic card Nvidia quadro 2000D, Ram 32GB non ECC, kingston SSD 1Tb + HDD+TB an old system i know but it still works and if i wanna change it i need a good reason for it to put it forward to the it department).

All the work I do in mostly on ssd, with the hdd used as a back-up. On Friday i left the pc on since i planed to work from home (it wasn't the first time I did so). i finished my work, saved the files i was working on, made a pdf based on them and on Monday my file was no longer on pc. all the work was done on the pc from work, i just connect to it from home.

The same issue repeated itself several times, in the end after a failed windows 10 update, i got a replacement ssd + a new OS = Windows 11 ( so current specs are: win 11 professional , dell precision T1650 Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1220, V2 @ 3.10GHz 3.10 GHz, Graphic card Nvidia quadro 2000D, Ram 32GB non ECC, SSD 1Tb samsung + HDD+TB + a spare 1TB SSD Kingston " the old one with crashed windows 10")

Same problem keep appearing, at a random time but at least once every 2 weeks.

I work on a drawing, I save it. The second day the drawing no longer exist or it is there but in a state that is rewound to at least a few days before Or i work on a drawing, save, and then the drawing is no longer there.

Since i have like 40- 50 projects a year in autocad, the sistem is pretty well organized is not like a made a drawing in another folder and forgot about it. all the projects i made are split based on an internal project number, with, if the customer has different numbering system a refference to its own numbers. That is also why i cant really afford to loose the work of at least 1 day, for me at least is a major setback.

We said ok, maybe the old autocad + new OS dont work well togheter, so we got a new 2023 LT installation ( now in demo on the pc the key was meant to be installed by the it department these days but since i saw i got the same issue again, lets see if it is from somewhere else first) and i have the same issue repeat itself again.

i have autosave + backup on in autocad every 10 mins, i tend to use at lest 3-4 drawings opened at the same time + a couple of pdf files and a Solidworks installation so the ram usage is there ( around 20-50 % depending on what I do).

I am pretty sure it is not from OS ( my colleagues work pretty much on the same type of workstations with the same age as mine) and definitely not from the autocad, still i hope that someone might give me an insight why it behaves like that. I am using Autocad for like 8 years or so and the way i used it was always in this way ( is not like overnight i started to push the pc harder and it starts to throw random errors at me now), also the pc specs where pretty much the same all the time, the ram was only updated a year ago when i got 16 more GB and a switch from the hdd as a main to the the 1 TB SSD from kingston since i had a project that could not fit in the Solidworks memory at only 16GB ram that i had at that time.

For at least half a year after the ram update it run without issues, the ram is from the same manufacturer, same speeds since is compatible with the old 16 GB.

Thank you

It's highly doubtful AutoCAD is causing this.

@Rob That was also what I expected, in the end I use autocad from quite some time and never had issues with it.

@pendean thank you for the reply, based on the way it behaved i also expected to be something hardware related, but the guy from IT department kept saying it must be software based.

If you are losing files, then were you are storing them is the problem. You have versioning on or it is backing up incorrectly, or something else. You cannot fix that.
If your entire laptop is misbehaving, you probably need to wipe it clean and start with a fresh OS/software package install.

Either way, your IT person should be digging deep into the problem to get you back to work instead of making you suffer and lose files at the moment. You might need to talk to your bosses. Good luck.
