We are currently having heated discussions for a 50 unit project about whether it is worthwhile to rename layers with a suffix of their phase, or simply use an xref with the phasing as polylines. Does anyone have any experience either way when it comes to how this plays out? It seems to me the quadrupling of your layers is a detriment, even if you think you may gain some layer filtering abilities for IP sets. Is this even practiced like this anymore? My memory is you do not name you layers by phasing since you tend to learn that later in the project life.

Thanks!

Our naming conventions are often dictated by things that happen down stream from design. you may want to get some input from those who will own the document after completion.

You may also want to avoid creating layers for things that could be handled in a paper space or with viewport overrides etc.. Some times we choose the wrong tool for the job and one i frequently see it over use of layers for lack of understanding of how other features work. Not saying thats always the case, but i have see some wild stuff.

Absolutely- I agree. There are a lot of tools available, I do wonder if the answer in this case is the strong layer filter tools or layer manager layer states. The person who really wants the layer name- suffix solution always thinks they have the right answer, and can bully everyone even when it isn't the best solution. He's stuck thinking the contractor will go past a phase and and construct into the next phase if they see the continuation of the plan (past the phase line-without freezing the other phases)🙄...I'm hoping to get some extra perspectives to help me in the inevitable convincing that will have to be done to get to the best solution for this situation.

Thank you so much for your input!
