AutoCAD - Multiple xref - want different color settings

I have some drawings with several xrefs, but I want the colors to be treated differently on different xrefs.

1. I want to override the colors on one xref (typ. the layout where I want a grey color, in the source file some objects are not Bylayer..) -> I.e similar to Xrefoverride = 1

2. The second xref, I want to keep the colors from the source file. -> Xrefoverride = 0

Using AutoCAD 2021 (soon 2023..)

Any suggestions?

PS: Changing the colors in the source files will be a BIG job........

Xrefoverride is a setting in the host file, so it is for ALL DWG Xrefs in this file.

There are issues with use SetByLayer in the source files (we have received them from external sources):
1. It will effect all files where the source files are used.
2. All layers have color = White
3. The layernames are somewhat cryptic..
4. In some files there are 300K+ objects....

You have to die a death, you can choose which one.

- copy the file and edit the copy

Instead of SetByLayer, choose a tool to "SetByObject" (it is not a native command, but you can search and find tools to set the layerproperties to the object, if the the object property was "ByLayer").

Sorry, but it sounds you knowing enough about these things and the only thing I can do is to confirm that

there is no smart way for your needs.

Sounds like setting Xrefoverride and Visretain to 1 is the way to go. Then you can use the Layer palette to select all the layers of each xref and change them to the colors you want. The changes will stay regardless of what happens in the original drawings.
