We need to know if AutoCAD 2024, will have a new DWG format/version (Newer than DWG 2018 version)

Hi,

Does anyone know if AutoCAD 2024, will have a new DWG version/format (Newer than DWG 2018 version/format).

Or will it still be the same DWG 2018-version?

When will AutoCAD 2024 be realeased?

For which AutoCAD version will Autodesk change to new DWG- version/format ? (If not on AutoCAD 2024)

Anyone who knows is under NDA. If you want to find out, you'll need to join the Beta program. And then you'll be under NDA and can't talk about it. Much like the Dao De Jing

May I ask why you need to know about that 5-ish months before the software is released?
What is the dire business need?

We need to plan for the future, and this has to do with other programs and applications that we support and program. We need to plan for the future is the short answer.

Keep an eye out for any What's New for 2024 articles. They sometimes come out a little before the actual release but basically, unless you have insider knowledge as stated above, you will have to wait.

This is probably the only question that any of us who are just AutoCAD users here and do not work at Autodesk can tell you. Since for the past decades Autodesk has issued the annual product update by end of March each year, most likely that will occur again for 2024.

@strangby so do we all my friend: everyone here is an end user and Autodesk customer like you. You'll not officially hear much of anything until about Feb/March every year. it is only October today.

Or do what the tip above suggested: just don't violate that Autodesk NDA, you'll seriously regret it forever from what I've heard has happened to others.

Thank you all! I don't want to violate any Autodesk NDA, and I am satisfied with your answers for now. I realize we need to just wait and see then, what dwg-version AutoCAD 2024 will have. We need to plan for the possibility (risk) that there will be a new dwg-version I guess then.

If you are programming for AutoCAD, you should join Autodesk Developer Network. You can ask the developers questions like that. ADN users are also under an NDA.

Anyone in the Beta program can't answer. It would be nice if someone from Autodesk could give you an answer.

The .dwg file format can handle almost anything right now. I'm convinced that the 2018 .dwg format upgrade was to 'Help' people transition to named licensing. 😉

If they decide to change the .dwg version and add a 2024 version, I'm sure it will be for similar reasons. (Economic not Engineering).

(Sorry Autodesk, love you but gotta speak the truth).

@brian.strandberg Just FYI, the only reason for changing the dwg format, which is just a database, is to add/remove functionality, like adding a new entity class type. Strictly determined by programming needs, which is driven by customer needs and business plans. Historically, they wait for a few versions to introduce several features at once, rather than changing it each version.

Totally agree with you, but we have had the ability to add custom objects to the drawing database for some time. You can look at the objects created by Civil 3d or AutoCAD Mechanical.

I would totally be in favor of a new drawing version if it was faster or more stable. Big fan of added capability.
