I think that has to do with whether there's room between the extension lines for both the text and the "tail" of the tick mark [or arrow]. If not, the tail part gets kicked outside, just as arrows do.

You could have it always there by defining a custom tick block that includes it in both directions:

but that would probably mean more Dimensions would have their text kicked outboard.

AutoCAD - dimension style- extension lines suppressing on continuous lines

i'm making a custom dimension style, and have played with the extension line settings. i need to match a dimesion style that i recieved in pdf form. when i draw 1 dimension line, all the extensions look the way i want them to (you can see this is the '44' dimesion below). but when i have a group of continued dimesion lines, some extension lines are suppressed or disappear. it seems to alternate, between the upper and lower lines. you can see this below- the '20' to the left has alternating extension lines, and the '20' to the right has only upper lines. how can i fix this? thanks

Instead of that image .. Can we have a CAD dwg sample?

Surely that has to do with where the definition points [not showing in your image] are in relation to the dimension lines, i.e. above vs. below, and how far away. It looks like you have these settings going:

with the Extend beyond... and the Fixed Length settings equal [at whatever value], and Fixed length extension lines turned on. But [here showing the definition points] when the dimension line is too close to the definition point, the Fixed length extension lines won't go past the definition point [see the far right end]:

Even if you set the Offset from origin at zero, if the definition point is at the dimension line, you'll get the Extend beyond part of the extension line, but not the Fixed length to the other side that would need to pass beyond the definition point. I doubt there's any way around that other than to have the definition point farther from the dimension line.

that makes sense to me. i only caught the true definition points for the
first dimension line. after that i just continued on the line at the
distances that i needed. i'll try it out at work tomorrow. i'll let you
know, i'll be so happy to understand the problem.
as for the dimension line extending past the tick symbol- does that also
depend on the length of the measurement? i can't get the dimension line to
consistently extend to the distance that i specified. although i notice
that the original (now in pdf form) that i'm copying from, their lines also
don't consistently extend past the tick symbol.
