Hi there,

I have a whole project for which we can not make any xref bind.

We receive the following message:

Error: At least one of the specified xrefs failed to bind for an unknown reason.

Which is not helpful at all.

I tried everything I could think of and did a lot of research. It seems like it is a frequent problem.

We inherited this project from another practice, and they didn't use Autocad, but we received the drawings in dwg. (received from a client we don't have contact with previous architects).

There is a notification of a non autodesk dwg,

Is it possible to make it an autodesk dwg?

I have converted and exported and the notification is still there.

Is there anything in the settings that I should be modifying ?

Has anybody here been able to resolve this error?

Error: At least one of the specified xrefs failed to bind for an unknown reason.

Any ideas I could try?

Unfortunately I can't share the file here, as we have an NDA but I appreciate any help.

Try fixing all of your files, top and all xrefs: RECOVERALL command is a good tool to start with.

Done...no errors

It is now a Trusted dwg, but it still doesn't bind.

As side note: "no errors" in Recover, Recoverall and Audit doesn't means that nothing changed!

Because of this, you need a test after this (already done in this task here)

Are there object enablers available for that non-AutoCAD program?

Can the providing party try different ways of exporting to make it more compatible?

I've found that simplifying drawings helps with this. If there are any proxy elements in the file, it won't bind. Elements from AutoCAD verticals can also prevent binding. Files saved in later versions can be a problem.

Hi Pendean, I tried the inserting as a block—exploding and resaving option from the first link you sent. It worked yesterday, but when I opened the same file today, the problem is back.

Unfortunately, we don't have contact with the previous architects.

How do we ensure that there are no Proxys?

When I Qselect, it doesn't show any proxy. Is there any other way?

How do I know that there are Proxys?

Proxynotice ON(1)

Open the file in question. Proxynotice will show what applications are missing, or no pop up appears (= no proxys)

QSelect can select

1. graphics objects, not non-graphical objects

2. objects in current Tab only

3. objects, what are not nested (not part of blocks, xrefs..)

You have lots of very good information in this thread, including the direction from Autodesk in the links posted by another user. Go through them all then provide the offending file for examination if you are still stuck.

After following the other suggestions (zombie killer, purge, -purge, audit, etc) I only found one solution that works reliably. I've been trying to solve this for hours and I finally cracked it. What you need to do is open up the block menu in the target drawing, click the insert block at the top right, paste the directory location of the drawing that you want brought into the target drawing, and proceed throughout the other few selection steps as it guides. Depending on the size of the insert drawing it may take a few minutes to process it all but it will insert the drawing as a block without stripping everything out like a wblock command would. C3D surfaces will still be intact if you are using them

I have had such problems in the past... and reasons why this happens are many...I would like to give a cent from my side; hope it helps...

1. open the drawing (xref) which has this problem (not getting binded)

2. Copy things which you want from this drawing.

3. Open a new drawing and setup the drawing units to match the ones in your problem file.

4. Paste the things you copied but ...past ém at 0,0 co-ordinates.

5. Purge the drawing and save it .

Now you can use this drawing as your xref...and more often than not it will bind.

Drawing co-ordinates are important

Since I've been working with version 2025 of cicvil3d, almost all my XREFs have a bind option that no longer works.

I have two workarounds; if the XREF is only 2D, I copy and paste it as a block in the XREF (manually create a block from the XREF).

The second option is to do an Etransmit with the XREF bind option checked. It's really weird, but in the Etransmit, the bind works for me...
