DYNMODE SYSTEM VARIABLE

Hi,

Actually, I was studying the "DYNMODE" system variable and its values, based on the AutoCAD Help Reference, the acceptable values range is from -3 to 3.

Everything was clear with using the values (0,1,2,3) and working with them, but I got completely lost when I reached the line that says:" When DYNMODE is set to a negative value (-1,-2,-3), the Dynamic Input features are not turned on, but the setting is stored".

What does "setting is stored" mean?, and why would I store one of those settings if they are available all the time?, I can easily type "DYNMODE" and choose any value of them whenever I want.

You can use the F12 to turn Dynamic Input on and off. So if you have it set to 2 and want to turn it off for awhile you can hit F12 and then dynmode variable will be set to the negative of what you had it at. Then if you hit F12 to turn it back on it goes back to 2 or whatever you had it at. that way you don't need to change the dynmode value every time you want to turn it on or off, you just use F12 key and it remembers your setting.

Try this:

On the ribbon, go to Express Tools Tab=>Tools Panel=>System Variables.
In the search box in the top left, enter DYNMODE.

To answer your question, of course you can change this value anytime, but depending on your drawing's purpose and the drawing environment you want to establish, there are times you want DYNMODE to remain constant. Also, other users may have very little use, or no use at all, for DYNMODE to be set at something other than their favorite setting.

For example, a user may find when DYNMODE is on, it is annoying. In this specific user's case, it can be turned off permanently (the value would be negative). If the same user wishes to turn it back on, for example turned on but only for a certain sequence of steps, then he has the freedom to do so then turn back off like it was before.

Using those negative inputs really makes sense for me now, storing the DYNMODE setting the way you described would save a lot of time and effort indeed.

Hello Mr. @ChicagoLooper,

I completely understand you now, the case of using the DYNMODE will differ from user to another, If I'm a user who is not familiar with the DYNMODE command, I would prefer just using the F12 key for turning Dynamic Input on and off for sure, without changing any of its settings, on the other hand, If I'm a user who is concerned about the pointer and dimensional input for example, I would definitely prefer using the DYNMODE system variables to "SET AND STORE" the setting that fits me instead of the F12 key.

@ahmed_tareq314 it is easier to change the dynamic input settings by using the DSETTINGS command and going to the Dynamic Input tab rather than changing the dynmode variable. You can visually see the settings available. After setting how you like just use the F12 key for on/off.
