Creating overview sheet/page with numberd viewports to other sheets

Hi!

It's been some time since I used AutoCad and I have forgotten how I did this...

I'm using AutoCad to design the route for trenching and cable laying. I have the map a DG file and I add the route for trenching to this map. Its a BIG map and I need a way to create a set of Layout sheets to print not only an overview - but also a set up numberd sheets - connected to the Overview.

In the Overview - I wan't each view to be numberd so I can see which drawing to look at. And I want each drawing to be numberd...

I HAVE done this before - but how was it done?!!

Hi @fredrik

You can use the "Sheet Set Manager" tool. The Sheet Set Manager allows you to create and manage a set of layout sheets, organize them into a logical structure, and create a table of contents that can be used as an index.

To create a set of layout sheets using the Sheet Set Manager:

Open the Sheet Set Manager by going to the "Output" tab of the ribbon and clicking the "Sheet Set Manager" button.
In the Sheet Set Manager, click the "New" button to create a new sheet set.
Give the sheet set a name and select a location to save it.
Click the "Add" button to add layout sheets to the sheet set. You can create new layouts or add existing layouts from your drawing.
Organize the layout sheets into a logical structure using the "Add Folder" and "Add Subfolder" buttons.
Create a table of contents for the sheet set by going to the "Create" tab of the Sheet Set Manager and clicking the "Table of Contents" button.
In the "Table of Contents Wizard," select the layout sheets that you want to include in the table of contents and specify the formatting options.
Click "Finish" to create the table of contents.

I started looking at this but either I didn't understand how it works - or it wont do all I want...

I need a simple way to add/place new viewports on the modelspace to create new layouts - This might wotk with your solution
A way to number the sheets - also possible.
But how do I automatically generate an overview that shows where each layout viewport is placed, an also numbered...

1 and 2 is elegantly solved with your solution - but can it also solve number 3?

This will fill part of my requirements... most of them - but I have high expectations...

In a perfect AutoCad-world - it would work like this:

I have a Template-layout, with a viewport
I start the app - and chooses the viewport on this layout.
I add fields representing ex Sheetnr..
Back in modelspace - I klick to place a representation of the viewport
I repeat this until I have covered all the areas I want to create a layout for
As I cklick, a new rectangle for each "click", is created, representating the Viewport for each new layout.
Each Rectangle gets a sheetnumber
An overwiew layout is created with each new layout clearly numbered.
Overcourse - On each layout, theres a small overview - hioghlighting the active sheet

Have you seen something like this?

Or some of it.... 😁

When I'm done - I click Create, and a new layout for each click/rectangle is created - with data

You can use the MVIEW command.

Here's how to use it:

Type MVIEW in the command line and press Enter.
In the Viewports dialog box, select the "Overview" option.
Click the "Add" button to create a new overview.
In the Add Overview dialog box, specify the name and scale for the overview.
Click "OK" to close the Add Overview dialog box.
In the Viewports dialog box, click "Close."

Your overview will now be displayed in the current drawing. To number the viewports in the overview, you can use the VPORTS command.

Type VPORTS in the command line and press Enter.
In the Viewports Configuration dialog box, select the "Number viewports" option.
Specify the starting number and the prefix for the viewport numbers.
Click "OK" to close the Viewports Configuration dialog box.

The viewports in the overview will now be numbered according to the options you specified.

Hi,

The fastest way that you want is trough autoviewport, i did used when I did have a big surveys(created 75 layouts A1 in a aprox 1 min). but for first time user the program is not user friendly. but in rest the program in its self great helper in cases of multi layouts... over 30 p.

relayted to your ideal Autocad steps:

I have a Template-layout, with a viewport( delete vieport), just load the tamplate- Give it a name to the layout => 01, then go to model, an make a newview(command), select area that you need, then press ok.. see image below
~~I start~~ go to layout command mview , choose name option, type name given in my case "s", then chose scale, enter, or pick the place for the vieport
I add fields *( now create an mtext, for ex> page 1 of 10, select 1 (number 1) then right click, choose insert field

then filed category>other, system variable > ctab, OK
